We planted tomatoes, onions, and peppers in some homemade earthboxes, and boy, did they grow like crazy. We have more tomatoes than we know what to do with. I turned most of the harvest into salsa today and I'm canning it now -- just over ten pints total, made from scratch, soil and seed. I feel so domestic.

Good job!

You know what you should make??

Gazpacho!

Or invest in some pita bread and cheese, and make yourself a yummy homemade pizza! wub.gif

Far too late rave for diamondais and Noola.

Even though I'm not a fan of veggies, I've slowly but surely began to eat them. Tonight I had vegetable stew/soup with... onions... carrots... peas... tomatos.... string beans... potatos... and other stuff in it. It was canned. But the point is, I wasn't going to get it, but saw in my mind Noola and diamondais scolding me on the forums if they ever found out, so I bought it. And I actually liked it.

Thanks guys. It's the first time in a long time I was peerpressured into doing something good for myself. err.gif

Good! Canned aren't the best compared to fresh, but as a student living on my own and having limited funds, canned is a very good idea. smile.gif

All semblance of respect I had for Oprah's intellect, gone, in a fire whose temperature was over 9000 degrees

This is a rave because it is so damned funny

not quite SFW, involves wirty dords.

I don't have a "What 9000?!?!" motivator...

edit: according to some advice i got, i should make this more clear. I don't find pedophilia funny, or anything like it. What i find funny is that oprah was too dense to realize it was a joke when it was a group of kids raiding her forums

The fools continue to teach me the art of killing many men.

On this day, I have transcended the art of the light cut.

Lendren, that's really cool smile.gif.

I've always wanted to grow my own food, but I've always been too lazy/pressed for time to do it.
Noola2008-09-22 17:19:37
I can't grow my own food. Every plant I touch dies. sad.gif I managed to kill an AIR PLANT! This is a variety of plant that doesn't need freakin dirt or water. Just to be spritzed now and then with a water bottle. People use them in decorations, sticking them in seashells and baskets and so on to look pretty cause they require very little care. They get their nutrients from the freakin air! But I managed to kill all of the air plants I had. This is proof enough to me to stay away from anything green.

I do have an Ivy plant that I've had for going on five years. But it's a freak of nature. I forget to water it for weeks at a time. I keep it in the bathroom where there's only a teeny window. Somehow it still lives. I think it's a mutant of some sort. laugh.gif

But, I love home grown tomatoes. Nothing tastes better! Luckily I have coworkers who're good gardeners and they bring their bounty to the office now and again. wub.gif

We've never managed to grow our own food successfully before either, but this is the first year we tried these do-it-yourself earthbox-equivalents, and it has worked so amazingly well we were stunned.

How to make earthbox-equivalents on the cheap at home

We made two of these and planted two tomato plants into one of them, from seedlings. Maintenance is trivial: no weeding, just pour water through a hose every few days, you're done. By July (and this is in Vermont which is not known for its great weather for gardening) the tomato plants were taller than me, and we had to tie them off to the deck railing to keep them from falling over from their own weight. They had completely devoured the puny little metal tomato cages we had and also a few sturdy stakes, in a jungle of tomato. We brought in about 50 tomatoes the size of a hardball.

The pepper plants didn't do quite as amazingly well but also did very well. We have so many chiles we have to dry more than half of them.

We didn't allocate nearly enough space for onions. We had fresh onion greens all year long, but only brought in about a dozen onions. Next year, we'll be making four or five more of them.

Tomatoes on planting day:

Tomatoes at four weeks:

Tomatoes at six and a half weeks:

We stopped taking pictures after that.
Noola2008-09-22 17:36:37
Daaaang Lendren! Those are badass tomato plants! Look at the size of em!
Unknown2008-09-22 17:38:29
Did you give them some kind of steroids? o_O
