QFT. It's all part of the elitist attitude. They decide who gets let into the community and set other ridiculous laws. Examples include: what color your house may be, how often you must cut your grass, the type of flowers and plants you are allowed to have, where you can park your car (most do not allow your car to be parked on the road or in your driveway, it must be in your garage), visitor policies (some are even gated and locked with a gate guard to let in only authorized visitors), and other assorted policies. It truly is disgusting what the upper class does to keep the lower classes separate.
Erm, while I agree that it might be the case in some places, it's not necessarily to keep the poor man down. I live in a historic neighboorhood, (in Virgnia, this is, not my college apartment) and it's really an eyesore to go down the street with all these lovely colonial age (and colored) homes and then there is this horrid purple house with a yellow door and green shutters.
Also, gated communities are not really there to keep poor people out so much as they are an attempt to cut down on burglary. People feel safer with a guard at the gate, ya know?
Rave: Going home this weekend, so I'll have access to a computer for 24 hours in a row! Woohoo!
Unknown2009-02-04 04:24:32
Here's what I'd do- RENT a house in the neighbourhood. Drive property values down as much as I can(Firecrackers, tackiness, junk(not litter) in the front yard, and drive my car up onto the yard so that it'll leak into the ground. Then move out to a pre-determined location.
Noola2009-02-04 04:32:46
I don't have a problem with gated communities, cause they generally are safer and anyone I'd have visiting me would have a code or whatever to pass the gate anyway, but if I own a piece of property, the fact that someone can tell me how to decorate it makes me really freakin angry... And I don't even own property!

Shakespeare.
I was looking for inspiration for my randomised Lusternian insult generator, so I went to the master himself. I ended up laughing too much. Here are some choice tidbits.
I was seeking for a fool when I found you.
More of your conversation would infect my brain.
As I told you always, her beauty and her brain go not together.
Do thou amend thy face, and I'll amend my life.
Is thy name Mouldy?
On my knee I give heaven thanks that I am not like to thee.
You should be women and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so.
Would thou were clean enough to spit on.
He has not so much brain as ear wax.
She hath more hair than wit, and more faults than hairs, and more wealth than faults.
And for all the wrong reasons:
Thou misshapen Dick.

You're going to have to explain. How much and how often can they fine you? What law? Why, in the name of all that is holy?
You have to sign a contract when you buy the house or land. They won't sell it until you do. The contract, like any other legitimate contract, is legally binding. It specifies what the restrictions and fines are. You can choose to agree to them (and buy the land) or not (and not buy the land). Simple as that.
It may be bogus in many ways but it's perfectly legal. The owner of that land has no obligation to sell to you, so if they want to attach provisions before they're willing, your options are to take them, counteroffer and persuade them to change it, or go buy somewhere else. It's not really the government's business, provided the terms in the contract are themselves legally valid.

Can they force you to sign after you move in? I don't imagine so, but surely some putative neighbourhood neo-nazi (hiiiii, godwin) would stomp around waving a contract.

If you bought land without any provisions or riders at all, then no, they can't force you to accept new ones.

The solution is obvious, send your snow in numerous trucks to them.
