I hate to bring up the ever present topic of Great Houses and their benefits, but this was just a brief idea I thought of earlier that in my opinion would be really cool and a great incentive to actually reach a great house, and not only have a great house in terms of number of members, but have quality great houses.
What if there was some sort of benefit system past the initial great house status and family channel. For example, if the family were to write an extensive history of their family that was approved by the admins, they would receive some sort of reward, such as a family "artifact" (something like a piece of jewelry unique to the family that each member would wield. No purpose beyond RP). Or if the family had x number of members hold guild or city leadership positions in a particular city/commune (city leader, GM, GA or Champion) they would be awarded some other prize (a monument, perhaps, erected in that city/commune). Another cool reward would be an actual house or building on prime, though I don't know what the requirements would be for that (perhaps requirements +high additional gold/credit cost).
There could be other rewards as well, things that would be very difficult to achieve but would be really interesting and make having families be a purpose. All rewards would be for roleplay purposes only, so artifacts wouldn't give any added benefits or have special uses (though I suppose a house could have more of a use). Granted it's very difficult to even reach the 50 member requirement at this time, let alone have the family actually have a cohesive history and be full of -quality- members, it would definitely make it so that those houses that are selective and actually take the time to roleplay out their family actually have some sort of impact on the game. These are all just suggestions and I'd love to hear if anyone else had some ideas as well.
Just a thought.

Great Ideas!
Rakor2007-08-07 23:20:41
I think an artifact, some sort of item that doesn't decay, or a monument would be awesome. The Great Houses at the moment are definitely lacking.
The artifact wouldn't be able to hold enchantments or anything, it would be soley for RP purposes (like you said).

I think it's an awesome idea, and oddly enough I was thinking of something similar a few weeks ago when I was playing Imperian.
I think it would add excellent role play as well, as certain Houses build up their honor/wealth/reputation.

Sub artifact with "heirloom," and I'm on board.
Richter2007-08-08 00:51:55
Yeah, we need a way to make great houses not equal zerg spawning pools.

Which a drone has to sacrifice its life to prepare.

something like this?
CODE
probe crown
Two wings of gold sweep up and backwards from the sides of this wide, solid gold circlet. Center front, a large faceted Star of Celest reflects gem-like, any ambient light. The top edge of the circlet has been escalloped to create a repeating pattern
of waves ending in points, each terminated with a sea pearl. The very surface of the circlet has been slightly hammered, creating an affect in which light ripples like shifting water and cresting waves.
It weighs 10 ounce(s).

And yes Anisu, something like that.
Luciden2007-08-10 01:04:28
I like the idea. Not quite sure if any other great houses have a symbol such as the d'Murani with the Kestrel, but I would like to see that incorperated somehow, if possible...
Richter2007-08-10 20:34:31
I'd like to see house artifacts that you can add runes to.

You win
Go go Kalas family!
Unknown2007-08-11 01:04:38
obviously you need to "spawn more overlords."
Sylphas2007-08-11 05:48:06
Great ideas!
Lusternia has been open a few years now, and we have no Great Houses. Every family even close to being there already has a clan, afaik, so the benefits beyond bragging rights are pretty much worthless.

What's the point of a system that will never be used? No family will ever achieve great house status. Get over it.

This is true too. Unless the number is lowered or our population seriously jumps, we're not going to have more than maybe one, and I would guess the quality there would be rather low.
I'd almost rather see it just be granted by the admin to a family that's prominent in the community, with a decent number of members, i.e. those who can manage the RP/politics/etc. to be a Great House.

Another idea I have is that when a family reaches 50 active members, their family channel is also a cartel and they are able to submit ONE design from -any- trade per year. So they could do jewelry, tailoring, forging, bookbinding or artisan design. This would be similar to the channel, where if you fall below 50 members the designs are not available.

Why are you trying to add more to a family that reaches 50 numbers? It's such a huge number that it's basically never going to happen (and if it does, it would be rare enough that it still wouldn't be worth the time to code more to it).
I have the feeling that it's pretty much a scrapped concept anyways. Not worth the time to fix it, not worth the time to remove it, so it just hangs around and spawns new posts and threads every so often.

Because d'Murani is going to reach it :|. And then when we do everyone will be totally jealous and be all, oh I want to join! And we'll be all, ha no, ye of little faith.

Right on, Veo. We can't let naysayers and mathematics get us down!
