WOO! Yesterday, I got my VERY FIRST CAR!! YAY FOR ME! It's a '98 Volkswagen Jetta. It's a standard, which'll be good, since I have no idea how to drive a standard yet! I'll learn on that thing, I suppose. I'll post a picture of it once I find my digital camera.
P.S. Oh, and you'd better start celebrating! MY BIRTHDAY'S NEXT THURSDAY! TURNING 16!!!

How come kids these days get newer cars?
Lucky...

My first car was an 84 Mercury Grand Marquis which makes me older than some around here and not as old as others.

Congratulations . Try not to destroy the transmission.
Standards are better to learn on than automatics for new drivers, in my opinion. You have more control, and once you learn how to drive a stick, you can drive whatever car you want to. Plus, when you drive a stick, you can't sit there and text/talk on your cell phone (which you should never do anyway).
I remember my first car, which I still have. A nice little truck, even though it is small and rather slow. But it does its jobs.

So can you drive yet? Or are you gonna get your license when you turn 16? (assuming the laws where you live are the same as the laws where I live)
Talnar2007-08-18 00:22:35
Well, in New Hampshire, you can take Driver's Ed, which I'm going to do, and get your license at 16, or you can wait until your 18 to get it w/o Diver's Ed. I CAN drive (though an automatic), but not by myself legally.
Stangmar2007-08-18 01:40:22
Congrats. I still have my first car. A 1989 Pontiac Firebird. Red and white w/flames on it. Catches cops attention rather well. don't wreck.
Stangmar2007-08-18 01:42:16
Oh, and civics are good for reliability and economy, but they aren't fast enough for my taste.
Tajalli2007-08-18 01:52:57
First cars are wonderful. I just had my brakes fixed up - but I've a 1969 Camaro.
Standard is best to learn on, I do agree.
Trying to teach someone standard after they started on automatic though, is a pain.

No kidding...

Damn Tajalli, how did you get your hands on a 69 Maro? Firebird/Camaro is without a doubt my favorite car ever! My dad has a 67 Firebird. it's about the 3,500th firebird ever made, if i recall correctly from the numbers. I bet nobody beats you from a stop light.

One of my foster parents from a ways back did a lot of work with that era of cars. It was one he had been working on for a bit, but received an overload of other vehicles, so gave it to me to finish fixing up. Oh, inadvertent connections.

Grats! May the roadkill-deathmachine serve you well!
My first (and current) car - Audi 80, which I got from my grandpa on 18th birthday. A typical senior citizens' car, with life support instead of a lighter (just kidding. Probably). A refreshingly boring car, but it's got a great silver colour.
EDIT: With a manual gear, of course! Automatic = training wheels.

Heh, my family has an audi 80 too. None of my own though, no need for it.

This was my first car last week.
Now it's slightly less interesting, but still pretty cool. (The rest of the fur has been taken off since this photo, as well.)

You should have called that car "The Shag Wagon" due to the fur. But it's quite tacky, and quite ugly, IMO, with the fur. Nice car otherwise!

Teaching someone to drive on a stick who learned on an automatic is one of the worst situations to be in. But what makes it worse is if a girl has to teach a boy (a bit stereotypical, I know ). I had a boyfriend who drove an automatic, but wanted to learn a standard. I decided I'd be nice and let him learn on mine. I think he was jealous that I could drive one and he couldn't, because I remember we got mad at each other. He kept trying to shift like he was in nascar and didn't really understand the concept of the clutch. Later on, long after we broke up, he calls me up and asks me to teach him how to drive a standard again because he was getting one of those new Volkswagons. I decided, again, I'd be nice and help him out... it'd been a long, long time since I'd seen him. Only this time, instead of taking my advice and trying to learn, he tried to tell me that I was killing my transmission, wearing out my brakes, wasn't driving my car right, etc., etc. Needless to say, I kicked him out of my car and told him to figure it out himself.
So when you -are- learning to drive a stick, just try to keep cool. It gets easier the more you practice, but practicing enough to get it down is difficult. The person teaching you to drive the stick knows a lot more about it than you do .
Also, have you taken driver's ed? If you can afford it, do it, because it'll cut back on your insurance. A lot of people think it doesn't make any difference and that you'll just be paying about 30 dollars more a month, but if you get into an accident, your insurance is going to skyrocket into silliness. If you took driver's ed, they'll go a little easier on you, since accidents do happen. I certainly don't suggest waiting until you're 18... because that really is torturous. Practicing driving during your high school years makes you better prepared for scares anyway.
Just don't drive with a lot of friends (it really is distracting), don't text and drive, and for goodness sakes, don't talk on a cell phone and drive until you've been driving for a while first. It's especially hard in a stick, and you're really just putting yourself into danger. Even worse is when there's people in the car, because it's you who's got their life in your hands. It's best to just send people to voicemail and answer them when you've stopped.

It was called the Mooris by my dad, (it's a Morris Minor). The fur was for the Arts Festival in the city where we live.
