Alas, I consumed my bowl of icecream before the meeting.
I feel for you, man. I'd send you some. With caramel, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry.
Acrune2007-09-03 06:07:59
There's always bowl of ice cream #2. Can never have too much ice cream.
Xenthos2007-09-03 06:18:02
Hmm, caramel is tempting...

I would but I really don't feel like cutting all the Bellator/DoK spam out of it.
Because I am that interested, and because I am a sad, sad person, here's a program to do it for you! (You have to run it in a command prompt dialog in windows.)
snippity.exe
Also, the code (so you can compile it yourself if you don't trust an exe file):
snippity.cpp
Yes, its a hack job, but it should work (I think) and get that log posted up here!

No one wants to know what was said there. Take this on faith. I've supported all sorts of unpopular admin decisions because I had confidence in their ability to see the big picture, but right now...yeah, just no. It's depressing.

Well, the only thing I've heard through the grapevine is that the Glomdoring elite have one month to change the trend, or novices can't join from Portals and there'll be no monk guild. However, without actually seeing the context in which that was discussed, it's too easy to jump to unreasonable assumptions and criticisms.
For example, just on that brief rumour, it would seem to be more of an incentive for said elite to keep going the way they're going, rather than change. Shutting off the newbie flow would appear to offer a great way to entrench oneself in a unique class and only allow in those that meet your standards. The lack of a monk guild might be disappointing to the lower level residents of Glomdoring, but if one is happy in one's class, it wouldn't seem too much of a loss. And assuming only the highest echelons of Glomdoring were at the meeting and thus responsible for the changes, this seems somewhat unhelpful.
So, wouldn't it be better to put the rumours to rest and let everyone see exactly what was said? Then the rumours and fears won't be exaggerated, and we can all see the justification behind any decisions.

You're assuming that there actually is a stagnant elite that doesn't beg and plead for people to show initiative.
Anyways, no, the context in which it was said was actually worse than you're assuming.

MY ICE CREAM IS MELTED. THERE IS NO MORE ICE CREAM OR CARAMEL OR WHIPPED CREAM. IT'S A BOWL OF WARM MILKSHAKE!!!!1
Diamante2007-09-03 07:13:47
For the naysayers, I sincerely don't think the vast majority of the glom "elite" -want- it to be closed off to newbies. Sure newbies got on my nerves sometimes, but during my Return-of-Kethuru-like periods of non-inactivityi, I like having people to order around to their deaths!
(Kidding, sort of)
Anyhoo, were that the case I myself would leave glom, sacrificing the RP that's kept me there instead of seeking somewhere more sociable and friendly. (That and the fact I can't imagine spending any more money on lusternia at this point and time in my life to change guilds)

Heh, I thought that was the assumption the summit was predicated on?
I still think it is at heart an RP issue, with all other factors either minor or symptoms of the underlying cause. That's why I want to see what was discussed!

Well not knowing what really went on.. but I've had a char in Ithaqua in Imperian when it was only a village and not a full council. I liked it. Considering Gloms rp maybe such a change would even fit you. That way you -could- be as elitist in your rp as you want without having to worry about total mud or IRE newbs not being able to keep up.

I think people want to play in Glom and get the admin support and coding resources as well. You'd have to sacrifice admin support for a small RP community like that.
Xavius2007-09-03 07:31:47
...you're all still assuming that there is a power structure up top that doesn't want the commune to grow.
Ok, quick poll. Shayle's generally considered one of Glom's more ruthless players. Who here has had a SD alt taught by Shayle? Who here felt intimidated, or abused, or downtrodden, or anything but eagerly accepted? No one? Ok then! Moving on...

Coincidentally, Ithaqua is suffering from the same "elitist, isolationist" problems that Glomdoring is supposedly having. They also don't want it to be that way, but have a role that is perhaps unfit for the game.
From what I've seen of Glomdoring, they have an interesting story and rich culture/RP, but an otherwise stagnant future with very little going on. The parallels between it and Ithaqua are striking.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Glomdoring brought about because of player interest, just as Ithaqua was? It's very thought provoking that two councils, in entirely different games, brought to life because of player interest, are now dying out because of lack of player interest. I wonder how that happens?
Xavius2007-09-03 07:48:07
The whole "dark" concept never seemed to draw many people.
When I left Achaea, Hashan was by far the smallest city, and it wasn't the newest.
Ithaqua apparently has issues.
And now we have Glomdoring.
