Glom doesn't allow people to say 'Cool' or 'Woot'? Those poor deprived people... that must be the source of all the trouble! (=p)
Unknown2007-09-01 02:38:16
Heh. I am really bad with novices. I don't know why. I try so very hard with them but I've never had one stick around. I do my best to be personable which is a hurculean task for myself. I'm friendly, make sure to be open and expressive, yet they never come back.
Yrael2007-09-01 02:43:33
Helping novices isn't hard. Just occasionally check cwho and shoot them a "Greetings! Do you have any questions, or need any help?". Most usually seem to have one or two, unless they're experienced people pretending to be newbies.

It's interesting how everyone seems focused on what the established players think is important, while the points Ainia and Tajalli brought up have been left largely by the wayside.
I'm not sure what to say. I really want to agree with them, since I had a fair bit of similar experiences in my own novicehood, but I think there's another element they're missing. Glomdoring isn't necessarily short on people who can and will interact with novices, but it does lack spread. A lot of our novice helper types seem to be around the same times that a lot of the others are, and during off times, there's really no one to do it, or those who want to do it.
This may be why you can see such striking and vast contrasts in reactions that Glom novices have with their time in the community (though certainly not the only contributing factor).

Late input - but while you can't force someone to be a novice aide - but also...you don't have to be an aide to help out, or check in. It shouldn't be something that those with the title should be doing - it is their job, yes, but others should help strengthen the community. A part note for that; novice aides, so I've found, and those with leadership - only- tend to those in their own guild. While yes, it's good to take care of your guild, it doesn't foster any sense of community if you ignore the rest in your commune because they don't have your guild's novice prefix.
As for the leadership in Glomdoring - it has been a problem. The community needs to strive to build the unity, but, as has been felt before, moving to just listen to others gets you frowned upon by many of the 'old regime', and makes it more difficult than it should be to just have a conversation. That being said - as has been seen with other attempts to get some change in leadership and movement going...it becomes more of a stress than it is fruitful. Contesting only goes so far, when it gets you a) on the bad side of those you are contesting, and what would have been a good chance is spoiled because the all but inactive come and cast a vote for a friend, even though they aren't around. Rant, yes, but also, it's got some validity. Many won't contest or voice of it, because of that reality that they see.
/-end ramble for now-/

When Veyda contested for Dark Marshall...though there were jokes of how Arel got a few votes - most of the real shock was that he won, not only that, but that enough voted for him to make it clear. To be serious - many, many were speechless on it.

That was uncalled for. You may not agree or get along with Yeralih, but she's hardly some lynchpin of Glomdoring's problems. If we kick out everyone who has gone for someone else's throat in Glomdoring, we'll have no leaders left.
Yeralih has put a lot into Glomdoring and also suffered because of it, just like many key participants have, and Glomdoring would be the worse without her. It's already the worse for people who are leaving/have left recently. Let's not compound that particular problem.

Dude. She locked him up in the shadow court, and tried to blackmail him into quitting undersecretary. You wouldn't kick her out for that?

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule-
From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of SPACE- out of TIME.
Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
With forms that no man can discover
For the tears that drip all over;
Mountains toppling evermore
Into seas without a shore;
Seas that restlessly aspire,
Surging, unto skies of fire;
Lakes that endlessly outspread
Their lone waters- lone and dead,-
Their still waters- still and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily.
By the lakes that thus outspread
Their lone waters, lone and dead,-
Their sad waters, sad and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily,-
By the mountains- near the river
Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,-
By the grey woods,- by the swamp
Where the toad and the newt encamp-
By the dismal tarns and pools
Where dwell the Ghouls,-
By each spot the most unholy-
In each nook most melancholy-
There the traveller meets aghast
Sheeted Memories of the Past-
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by-
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the Earth- and Heaven.
For the heart whose woes are legion
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
For the spirit that walks in shadow
'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
But the traveller, travelling through it,
May not- dare not openly view it!
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed;
So wills its King, who hath forbid
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
And thus the sad Soul that here passes
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.

Oh, and from the view of someone who is leaving Glom: It's too much of a backstabber atmosphere. I don't like that I have to watch whatever I say, because 1000s of alliances could suddenly arise if I say the wrong thing. I really love the Ebonguard, it's my favorite guild, but over the course of the last few months, it went dead. Back when Adrac was GM, it was thriving and a lot of people where around, but when I became GM, it was rare to see more than 3. I really wish I could've changed something, but I can't follow Ash's RP and play in Glom. Honesty doesn't mix with all that stuff going on. I only realized that after I came into Politics, and had a bit of time (due to my unwilling absence) to think about.
Estarra has it right. You really need to be a certain type for Glom. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a while to discover that.
So, I'll go, join Seren, live a happy life of bashing carelessly and chatting with Elo, which seems far more appealing thant watching everything I say or do just so I don't find myself without commune suddenly.

Yeralih locked Veyda up in the Shadow Court, and told him she would only let him out if he quit Undersecretary because she doesn't want him teaching the novvies.
Everyone told him to at least vote to ost her, but, as much as I really, really like Veyd, he lacks the balls to be an efficient leader.
Urazial2007-09-01 04:44:12
Oh. Yeah, as funny as that is in a way, it's also kind of sad and a tad bit creepy. Have to agree with you Ash, and you leaving Glom sucks, but I can understand it.

Poetic interlude aside...let me commence.
Yes, I obviously have already ruined my political career. Shayle hates me, Yeralih hates me, Jayden strongly dislikes me, and I have a total spin of the wheel for my last GM. Ministers don't mean anything anyway, and I can't do anything to change anything. Yet I'm also the person who everyone expects to do .
Have I dealt with the sheer mass of issues that, say, Sarrasri has, or Morgfyre, or Daevos? No. But this is one hell of a hot seat, and it's only people like Banazken who keep me in it.

Lets do a loss-of-function test here. If theoretically the Leaders that were causing 'trouble,' for lack of a better word, were removed, could you (or anyone) solve the problem?
Edit: This is not ment to be a personal attack, simply curious about how to solve the problem of a dying population.

It is extremely hard to replace guild masters, especially in glom guilds where population is relatively low and where GR5s are likely to support the current GM. (this is why I think the ability to vote and run for positions should depend on playingtime in that guild rather then guildrank)

There's that weird rumour about people being nasty to you on purpose (and trying to ruin your reputation in the commune) so that when you are contested for Dark Marshall you'll lose.
Diamondais2007-09-01 14:52:18
The only problem I've seen with Glomdoring recently, is it can be difficult making the steps to get into the Commune if you're a tad hesitant or limited in the amount of time you have.
The option is there to join, always, but can be difficult to deal with certain things like getting unenemied if you don't have the time to argue out why you should be unenemied.
I guess that sounds like a mini rant, but that's just my recent experience. :/
