Someone PMed me today asking for my old zMUD aethership system that I used to sell back when I still played Lusternia. Well, I haven't played for six months, and certainly don't maintain it anymore. But, if others find it useful, why not post it here? There are plenty of bugs that I was in the middle of working out when I quit, but you can deal with them.
The following is a copy/paste of the last email I sent out to those who bought the system, containing installation instructions and info. Note that the system is, obviously, no longer supported, so the planned updates mentioned aren't going to happen, and please do NOT contact me if there are problems =P
// Copy-paste follows \\\\
There is a small bug in aetherinit I never worked out. Sometimes, you
will find that the text capturing from commwin on just doesn't work at
all. If this happens, go look for an EMPTY folder named "commwincap"
(if you're getting this error, there will be one empty folder and one
non-empty folder by that name) and delete it. Things should work fine
once you do.
---------
To install:
First, delete the old aethership folder if you have a previous version
of the system. Then, go into the settings editor and click file/import
text and then find the file. Do not use settings/import.
Type AETHERINIT once the sytem is imported - this should turn off
things that should be off. You may experience an inability to hear
what anyone is saying before you do this, as importing my comm window
sometimes does that.
If you are not a mythical commander, enter the following on the command prompt:
#VAR MYTHCOMMANDER 0
If the COMMWIN does not work right for you (if things are being sent
twice), try entering the following on the command prompt:
#VAR COMMWINUSER NotShorlen
If that doesn't work, contact me. There's a zMUD bug in some versions
of zMUD that results in text capturing working differently for
different people.
If installing the system doesn't work, or goes wonky, contact me
through tells, messages, email, or forums pm.
When locked into a module, use COMMANDS to get a list of commands.
If your computer is terrible like mine and you experience zMUD
flickering oddly while flying with COMMWIN ON, click and drag the
communications window away from zMUD to make it into it's own little
window. That should stop that from happening.
The manual flight feature which lets you continue in the last
direction you went until you change directions or hit a wall (AUTOMOVE
ON), can, on very fast ships and not so fast computers, cause you to
go so fast your computer (or at least zMUD) locks up until you hit a
wall. However, on slower ships, it's very convienient for manual
flight.
INSANEDEF ON, which helps when you are flying while insane, may cause
you to fall off course if you get a lag spike. Not that manual flight
while insane is any safer. Really, just don't fly while insane at all,
and you'll be fine!
Updates since last version:
- Fixed some small bugs with the system, such as the ship not knowing
where the heck you are when you fusion across planes and then dock (it
kept telling me I was at the Seren dock on Elementalspace, for
instance).
- Fixed some minor bugs elsewhere.
- Added the ability to use normal movement keys to fly if you don't
have a numpad. So, when locked into the command chair, u is launch, d
is dock, in is transverse, and the direction keys steer in that
direction. This links to the AUTOMOVE feature, if you use that.
- Added paths to nexus worlds and Xion. This was actually in the last
version, but I never mentioned it. If you'd like any others, just tell
me and I'll make them for you.
Remember that if you want any features added, however major or minor,
just ask. Also, if you want any paths added, just ask. I know I'm
still missing most of Astral, but noone I know uses aetherships to
travel around there, so I haven't had a reason to make those paths
yet. Also, if there are any paths you think are poorly done, such as
the one from the Aetherplex to Elemental, tell me and I'll redo them
(that one is on my to-do list already).
To do later list:
- Fix empath spec controls (requires me to get ahold of a specced
empath, none even use this system yet though).
- Improve turret controls and add in combateer spec controls (I don't
know how aethercombat works yet, since it never happens, so I'm not
sure what's important to set up the system for).
- Gnome sales tracking.

I've been really tempted to port it to CMud.

Do it. I like the commwin stuff but it causes errors in cmud (or is that just my breaking magic working again? ). I've not found the time yet to take a look at it and I prolly won't for a while either... :/

You are my hero. If I get some free time (and a ship) I might try to tweak this, and add things for empath spec controls (I'm a trans empath, for now at least). Of course, I've never actually flown a ship myself yet, so we'll see how that goes.
