So..see the way EtherGlom and EtherWilde have a sort of middle ground? i.e Faethorn. Well, I was thinking why not make one of those for each opposing plane eg. make a neutral thing for Celestia and Nil....call it Cosmos...or something.... Let the 'constructive critisism' (hahaha) commence!
Zalandrus2007-09-21 16:51:36
Mmm, no...I can't exactly put into eloquent words why it doesn't fit with the philosophy of the other planes, but here's a try: having a middle ground for ethereal makes sense to me, because there are, naturally, other forests other than the Serenwilde and the Glomdoring that need to be represented in ethereal; they thus take the form of Faethorn...but for the upper planes, like Water/Earth and Celestia/Nil, there's nothing 'in the middle' per se in the prime plane to represent them in their respective higher planes...while the diagram from the website is kinda weird, I always imagined the prime plane to be a core (spherical, like the earth), the ethereal plane to sorta encompass all of it (like a layer of an onion, I think I've heard that metaphor a lot), but then for elemental/cosmic, more like beams shooting out from certain points on prime (the nexuses), that pierce little disc-like galaxies...
Astral, to continue heading "out", is another layer of the mushroom, kinda encompassing all. Aetherspace is everything in between the different layers.
It's rough, and probably doesn't hold up against ALL the details about the planes, but it's a nice image in my head

All right.
I think one thing that could improve what you presented would have been to entitle the post something like, "Neutral Area for Cities," rather than titling it "Idea" and subtitling it "Idea" in the "Ideas" forum.
That way, I could have seen the title and thought, "Well, I'm not really interested in cities, so while I'm sure it's an interesting idea, I can use this time to post more ostrich pictures in the Player Pics thread."

Zalandrus explained my view of the world very neatly. Couldn't have done it better myself.
However, there is a petit difference. I imagine Faethorn as middle grounds for everything sub-cosmic (and it is, really...), thus including Elemental Planes. I place them in tiers, like so: tier 1 is Prime (and somehow Aetherspace... but that doesn't count), tier 2 is Ethereal and Elementals (as they're all cross-connected), tier 3 are Cosmics as 'archplanes' (don't know how to explain it), and ultimately there's tier 4, Astral, an all-encompassing Superregnum.
Hmm... I blabbed too much. Either way, I don't know exactly WHY a median between Earth and Water (the Mudde Elemental, I presume >_>) or Celestia or Nil (I just can't imagine anything serving as a median for Cosmic Planes... all I see is the Void) wouldn't fit... It just... wouldn't.
Nice idea, but I say no.

Just imagine the "neener neener I'm standing right outside celestia about to raid" that would go on if a neutral cosmic place were to be created
And plus, you'd not only need something neutral between Water and Earth, but it'd have to incorporate Wind and Fire too to be complete in an RP sense...it's just opening up too many worms...

I have an idea: how about giving posts real topics and subtopics?
Everiine2007-09-21 20:36:19
I think it was presented in the histories that Ethereal is supposed to be a natural reflection of Prime, which is why all the Forests are there (except those who conveniently removed themselves). The cosmic planes are their own little worlds each tied directly to a concept or element, whereas the Ethereal plane is not so strictly tied (though boundaries still exist).
Also, the Catacombs are somehow involved with Ethereal (at least people in there show up in WHO), yet they're not connected to the rest of the plane.

Hmm... Off-topicishly, I always wondered where that Ethereal Gate in the palace on Spectre Isle leads to. Mainly because the stuff there automatically attacks me, which I find strange...
Arvont2007-09-22 12:28:52
I died there once. Me and my damn curiousity...

You both went into the Catacombs. They go through the Ethereal plane, but never touch it. I don't see why there would be any plane between Celestia and Nil.
Furien2007-09-22 18:34:16
The difference between Ethereal and Elemental/Cosmic is that Elemental/Cosmic are fairly easy to travel in and out of. Faethorn is just there for Seren/Glom fights, because there's only two entrances into their Ethereal counterparts- an archway straight into guards and a totem or using an aethership. Cosmic/Elemental have somewhat-safer cubix points, and the occasional planar rift.

What the foozle? Fascinating, fascinating.
