Hi, I'm just starting out here, on a reccomendation from a friend. I spent a little time looking over character ideas, and I'd just like a little input from the people who, you know, actually know what's going on. So, any help would be splendid.
I've got it narrowed down a bit. I usually like pretty direct character classes, so I'm leaning heavily to one of the warrior types or monk. It's not really important that whatever race I pick be "optimal", but it needs to be practical- like, it won't give me a headache because I thought it would be fun to make a warrior of a race that is terrible at physical combat.
Aslaran appeal to me, but their strength seems low for a warrior type, compared to some of the others. They have high dex though, which seems good.
The male bug guys seem like almost defacto monks, and their abilities seem pretty neat.
The Merian warrior type definitely looks interesting, but from what I can tell, it rules out monk, and requires alignment to a certain city?
There's always human, too, but there's so many different races here, I'd like to try something less familiar.
Basically, I'm having a tough time deciding. I'm leaning towards warrior just because there seem to be so many options for them- you get to pick a weapon style, and then you can pick either a sort of spiritualist power, or a more physical power (which is another choice I'm bouncing around, RPing an Aslaran Serenguard sounds fun, but I could never pick whether to have an animal companion in the end, or that sort of spiritual totem thing. ) On the other hand, the monks here seem neat because they're stylized to the setting (as opposed to the usual, near-direct far-east transplant job that gets done on them).
So, I'm sort of at an impasse! I'm not asking people to make up my mind for me, but if anyone has any reflections/experience, or even "that's not going to work out well/that's mechanically impossible" advice, I'd appreciate it.
...also, sorry for the sort of "train of thought" thing... I had a long day.

Try Aslaran. They are a master race for knights. Since the stat mucking, only the complete extremes really matter. It's the bonus/malus that you want to look at.

Aslaran make excellent warriors, especially since as Yrael said, strength doesn't matter nearly as much as it used to. If you go warrior you might also consider your city/commune's spec race if you intend to take totems; Merian Lord and Elfen Lord are both solid races, and Shadowlord Faeling is incredible if you want to be a speed warrior. Brood Viscanti is pretty crappy though.
By the way, contrary to what you might think, warriors are one of the more complicated classes for PvP (not that that's a bad thing).
