Not sure if this topic already exist, but I thought I would make one after I found out revan was a star wars character . I don't know Star wars at all..
Where did everyone get their names from? or did they make them up themselves.
Any one who has played Final Fantasy 12 knows how unoriginal my name is, but I was happy the guides hadn't played it yet.

I just took my real name and spelled it backwards.
Callus2007-09-28 08:19:06
I always spend a while thinking up original names for my chars, but when I went to make this one, Callus just popped into my head. It was much later that I found out it was an actual word.

It's odd how names often stick in our subconscious. I've used this name in several tabletop RPG games, and I always thought it was one I'd made up... But seeing this thread, I looked it up on Google, and it apparently comes from Planescape:Torment, which I used to play religiously. I never noticed the reference or made the connection until now.

I was in a Greek mythology obsessed mood. Think I'd just read Ilium and Olypos or something.
Lenalith2007-09-28 09:02:17
I made it up. I was going for an illithoid feel, or what I thought was one, with the whole 'lith' thing.. Plus I like Lena as a name. I've done a Google on it quite recently, and most of the top results are me. There are a few people on uh, Neopets and stuff, but I assume they also made it up...

Ian Irvine, Tetrarch. Gotted used to using it, or anagrams of it. Leyar, Aeryl, etc.
Eldanien2007-09-28 09:46:06
Quenya/Sindarin influence. I grabbed a handful of syllables and made sure I wasn't saying 'goat milker' or anything like that. A little tweaking, and voila.

Now you're going to have me checking the HONOURS of every anagram I can work up...

Mine was easy, after a couple of tries with the MUSH name generator I chose this one. I used to spend minutes thinking what name should I choose, but now I just use the name generator.
Aison2007-09-28 10:03:17
When I was making my character, I randomly hit the keyboard. I came up with something starting with an A and turned it into Aison. It also relates to some greek mythology tale I haven't read, and Aison was also a sculptor or some such from ancient greece. I had no idea of any of that at the time -- admittedly I did google Aison before I confirmed my character, to make sure it wasn't subconsciously taken from some video game, but no, just greek mythology stuff. I contemplated for a short while about whether or not to play a male or female character or choose a different name. Aison ended up being female anyway, though.

I added A,r and T to my name.

Picked my name off of a name generator web site. They had really long lists of names, and I figured that a name beginning with 'I' would be slightly less common than a name beginning with any other letter. On my first day, I met Ialie and Ialen...
I had an alt for a short time, and his name was a combination of two names I found on a name list web site: Yngvar and Deogul, to make Yngvardeogul. The guides told me it was too long and complicated, so they helped me think of a new, more suitable name: Yngvarmanos.

Bethesda's Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall for me
Xiel2007-09-28 11:22:05
Comes from an ongoing pattern of X's for me. I don't -think- it came from anywhere...but I haven't checked. Oh well. It's a me.
Tajalli2007-09-28 12:38:20
Started with the name I used to use in some old chat/forum RP's, Taj. But, I wanted something with a bit more feel to it, Taj wasn't doing it for me anymore, so it became Taja, but that wasn't enough either. It didn't completely roll off the tongue - mayhaps the nickname, but not the full name. So, I ended up with Tajalli.
Then, someone IG asked me of my religious orientation. I had a 'wha?' moment, so trusty Wiki came to my aide. Apparently my ignorance was sound, as Tajalli is a real term, for real religion.
Which, oddly enough, fits some parts of her personality. So, it is a nice blunder.

Same way I usually come up with names for fantasy games: I randomly point to things in the room, picking one or two letters from their name, then rearrange them into something.
Unknown2007-09-28 13:10:52
I got my character's name (Akui) from my cousin. Basically, I told him what sort of character she is, and about her personality. He asked me what letter I wanted the name to start with, then came up with Akui in a couple of minutes.
Then I got to pick his! ...and now we get to argue over who's using the comp when we aren't working opposite shifts.

It started out with me going into character creation with a rather unoriginal idea in mind. I thought it would be funny to make a Magnagoran character with "nil" stuffed in the middle of their name. Since I generally prefer hard sounds to soft sounds, I ended up stuffing it after "rag" and linking it to "liff", just being "lith" with a minor tweak. But as is my tendency, I changed my mind half way through character creation and threw her into Glomdoring instead, though the name sticked.
Over time, I ended up with people trying to pick my name apart, and thought I'd build it off of "ragni", which seems to have several different means in different languages (Hindi for melody, Italian for spiders, Nord for lovely godness, and I think one or two others I forgot), and even had one person thought I was making reference to Douglas Adams' "The meaning of Liff" with the end of my name.
So, does my name have some sort of deeper, subconscious meaning? None that I'm aware of, but it's fun to see people try to figure it out.

Yeah, it is super odd. My very first character (back when Lusternia first opened) was the name of my old Achaean character, which I had thought was original. Then, sometime in the last three years, I re-read Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time and saw my character name as one of the towns in Andor.
Arel is just a randomly made up name though. I did google it and find communications companies and recording companies, but those aren't where I got the name.
