Where did you get your name from?

Tansy is a weed with bright yellow flowers. It has a strong scent and is used as a companion plant in gardens to keep insects away. It looks pretty and harmless, but it highly poisonous, and even though it used to be used as an herb to flavor foods, it can kill you if you get too much of it.

Did I think about all of this when choosing the name? No, I just thought it sounded like who Tansy is, but it may actually fit better than originally planned.

I randomly chose letters. Most of my fantasy names these days start with D or K/G. I decided to try something new, so I thought of Merlin.

Voíla, Meian.

QUOTE
The rune Jera is the twelfth rune in the Elder Futhark. It is the rune of harvest and beneficial outcomes. The concept of harvest is often misunderstood to be merely the act of "picking the fruit." In this case, nothing could be farther from the truth. The concept actually speaks of the rewards of the entire process. A seed can’t grow if it isn’t properly planted. Not only that; but if it is to be truly fruitful, the resulting plant has to be tended - i.e. watered, weeded, and fertilized - over the entire time of its growth into maturity. Only then can the actual harvesting of the crop begin. Jera speaks of the complete cycle of birth - maturing - and bearing fruit.

I have a fondness for using rune names as of late (I've used Fehu, Dagaz and Sowilo on other games), usually I just make them up.

I know I got it while browsing through character names websites... but now I can't find the site anymore. No idea.

But I looked up "Linaeve" and it's actually all over some baby names lists, and apparently means "tree of song." Quite fitting, really. smile.gif

When you switch dialects, you're the lovely impatience rune that druids love so much.

Normally I just make them up on the spot, but I have a few names that travel with me (Xalaen, Edanor, Dairuchi and a few others)

Seta Sojiro.
Asmoth2007-10-06 23:28:11
Asmoth is a name I've used for about 15 years in muds, I don't recall it every being from anything else. And think I simply heard the word for the compass asmuth and liked the sound of it. So I would think it's original, thought when I google it, it says something about a demon in some game, but I'm pretty sure that's from after I started using it... I DEMAND A ROYALTY!

Asmoth

I made my name by taking the first and last letters of my name and switching them. Note: NO REFERENCE WHATSOEVER TO SHREK. Oh, and no reference to some google thing about an oil project or something, I mean, what's up with that? wtf.gif
Unknown2007-10-07 01:18:19
Shric, Chris... wow, I never saw that!
Sylvanis2007-10-11 14:24:25
From Warcraft III after my favorite elvish character.

I guess.
Noola2007-10-11 15:30:14
Well, for Noola, when I was prompted to enter a name I asked myself "What should I name this new character?" And my mind kind of latched on the word 'new' which sounds like 'moo' only with an N instead. So, I had Noo, but that's not a very pretty name, so then I figured, well, it's a girl character so best to give it a girl sounding ending... like 'la'!

So, Noola.

Course, it turns out, and I didn't know this till sometime later when I googled 'Noola' on a whim, that Noola is a real actual name! laugh.gif
Caffrey2007-10-11 19:28:17
I've mentioned this before, but my name isn't actually from the Dragons of Pern author, although I do have some of her books. I was using Tacasti the name I use in Achaea, which is itsacat backwards biggrin.gif, when I first entered Lusternia. Bau saw me and suggested I should try a new name for this place. So I looked at my desk for inspiration and at the time I was drinking a can of Irish beer... biggrin.gif

irrelevance, irrelevance... Alban, I found that on some name website, and really liked the sound of it.

whatthe.gif I found it, thank you very much.

Oh, and I have no idea where Raiha came from. I have a huge list of names that I've collected over the years in a notepad file, and it happened to catch my eye the day Lusty came out.

I used one of those name generator things; turns out when you google it, it's a word in another language (I think) but I have no clue on the translation.
Ananat2007-11-07 00:40:55
I liked the sound of Anana, but 1) It sounded like 'banana', and 2) I was sick of female characters ending with -a, as if a name could never be feminine without that ending. I'm guilty of that. So, I threw on a -t to solve both these problems!
Aison2007-11-07 00:54:56
It's like a mix between Ana and Nat!
Fualkner2007-11-07 02:02:39
Clicked the WoW name generator a million times one time when I was bored. I don't play WoW. This popped up, and later it stuck in my head. However, I mispelt it the first time I ever used it, so from then on I just decided it was gonna be my name.

Better that than a banana, I still say!

D&D Greyhawk.
Incabulos is the god of destruction and disaster (and before I went on a guildhopping rampage, I was a geomancer, so it fit nicely).
I'm surprised no one (except Tully, a while ago) figured it out. quiet.gif

Yay for originality?
