When I had lower prices, the herbalists-with-shops all complained I was driving them out of business, so I made them overpriced on purpose just so other people could get some of the business, and I still get ribbed for it!
I'm sure I'm losing money with rent in my shop. Every once in a while, someone comes along who realizes that my prices for a 40+/40+ shield or 90/90 plate aren't outrageous at all, and in fact definitely net me less profit than bashing with materials cost and time thrown in (especially on the latter). Then I see a little spike of profit that's more of a psychological "Yay!" than an actual gain.
Though, as a commune shop I suppose my client list is fairly limited, especially for forged goods. I've had a pretty affordable 212 tahto sitting in there for real life months.
So, you should price what you feel like pricing. If herbalists complain, remind them that not everyone is so fortunate to have a tradeskill that can make a reliable profit.

Without getting too far off quotes territory, I don't just do it because of complaints, but also because the shop's primarily intended to ensure Spiritsingers can get everything in GHELP EQUIPMENT if they want to, but even so I encourage them to go direct to forgers, tailors, etc. (partially by having high prices). Other "staples" items like herbs are priced fair-to-a-little-high so that when Spiritsingers get their discount it comes out competitive (though I price sparkleberry higher since that's the herbalist's bread-and-butter, and I do want to be a good neighbor).

This morning I sent Barrin some loti spores in one of those and that's exactly what I said, "I should have saved those for Aesyra".
Later when someone else got Ironbeard visiting, Barrin thought it was me again.

Posted on request. Cassyda brings her complaints to the Guildmaster via song.
QUOTE
In a high, wistful soprano, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "Oh, Elohora, she of shining, radiant Light // Hear your youngest daughter, and hear my plight // For I have come to sing sweet your praise // Let my strings ring high beneath Celestia's rays."
Sadly, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "And yet, to become a single Troubador // The second amidst the hallowed Cantor ranks // I must, of following, thus obediently do // Or be deemed unworthy of singing before you."
Head bent low over her strings, lips quivering, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "Or be called less than Cantor - and not advance // Beyond the second - and no voice to be had // Within the Guild, no vote, nor onwards move // Serve the novices - or the empty library, soothe."
Voice wobbling, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "First, the history - and that's no burden, there // Japhiel would have us know history, foul and fair // What happened informed what has come to pass // Come to this far shore, to stand in holy mass."
Voice lifting bravely in sweet accompaniment to her lute, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "Then prepared for battle, Methrenton does order forth // And from vials and potions, we must carefully sort // What is to heal, and to cure the awful harm // Inflicted by the Tainted or a carelessly swung arm."
As if dragged forth in agony, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "But then - a-courting we must then do go // Young as we are - with falser mien, and falser glow! // My heart, however, is given to the Gods alone // But to become a true Cantor - must I thus atone?"
Crying, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "To fake a lovesong, though my heart feels naught // Go forth and seek that "special someone" - so we're taught! // And I of first rank, new to sing and serve // Must seek a husband - or wife - and my love reserve?"
All but sobbing, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "But worse is this, to fake a cheerful smile // A subjective task - "have a cheery attitude" a paper smile // Thin and false and singing praises to those on high // The Conductor, one means, who looks down with jealous eye."
Voice breaking, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "And who is he that of now I do speak? // But he who took gold, and insults the weak? //Who has driven those on high to positions low // And insults again, again - as "retards" slow?"
Teak curls his nose up and grimaces at Cassyda.
Valiantly trying to stop weeping, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "O, Supernals, hear me, though low I be? // I've song these songs in arbours, yes, little me // Have gone to beg at shrine and in glen // Have quested far, both now and then."
Voice rising to piercing heights, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "I'd seek the answers from the fickle Gods // To seek to change these - but what the odds? // The voices rise dischordant, angry, loud // The humble, quiet against the angry and proud."
Her singing cracking, pained, Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture sings, "And where Light ought to be sung within those halls // The poisoned tongues ring loud in darkened halls // I'd sing the Light, if I were let to learn and thrive // But their song is false - and a song, I cannot contrive."
Aesthete Cassyda, of the Starlit Overture's fingers fumble, a dischordant minor ringing loud through the room.
