Vista and zMUD just don't get along.
Anyways, I'm getting the messages that I got the last two times Vista opted to delete my system and its backup. It'll be gone as soon as I close zMUD, which I can put off for a fairly long time, but Microsoft is eventually going to put out an update that restarts my computer without permission, or something is going to crash Windows, or...yeah. Anyways, I can't use save or save as anymore. I can't make changes to the .mud file. I can still log, though. Is there any way to get zMUD to produce the entire text of the system? Are there any other suggestions to salvage this before I revert to a really old version?

Can you select the class folder that your system is in, and go to FILE -> EXPORT TEXT and export it to a floppy, jump drive, CD, or some other external storage device?
Xavius2007-12-03 06:33:45
I don't have a File/Export Text. If it's in the Settings window, I can't do it.
EDIT: A little more detail.
The .muds are already gone. Things that alter the files will give you a string of access violation pop-ups. The system itself is still in working order, though, presumably loaded into memory.

What happens, if instead of opening the main big settings window, you go to the settings drop down menu in the main Zmud window, between View and Actions, go down to "Export", and just export everything to a text file?

Wooo!

Oh thank god, I thought my computer was just out to get me. Mine does it all the time. I have my system saved in 5 locations because it deletes itself on a fiarly regular basis

Go to whatever shortcut you use to start zMUD, right-click, choose Properties, go to Compatibility tab, check Run this program as administrator. zMUD was not built for Vista, so you have to work around it this way. In other words, it's not Vista that's broken (in this instance, anyway), it's everyone's expectations/understanding and also zMUD's file handling.
Xavius2007-12-03 08:34:27
Running zMUD as an administrator doesn't fix this problem. Running zMUD as an administrator is a basic requirement to get it to open most days.

You could try turning off Vista's UAC (just do a search for it in help to find out how) and see whether or not that helps but in general...I wouldn't use Zmud with Vista. It's not really compatible and it never is going to be. Cmud is the Vista compaitble client and any Vista compatibility issues will be addressed there.

Hmm, well, clearly you're doing something strange then. I've used zMUD on Vista for several months without ever losing my settings. I'd say you could upgrade to CMUD, which is Vista compatible, but that's not really much better right now. My CMUD dies when I enter the wrong command or fire the wrong trigger still.

1.34 is pretty stable depending on what you are doing and given your bad luck with Zmud it probably will not be any worse for you. Quite a few Lusternians use 1.34 exclusively and do rather well. I do not recommend trying to migrate a zmud system over to cmud though you can give it a shot if you're not afraid of scripting.
2.14 is not fully stable but some consider it to be more stable than 1.34 was and a lot of pretty big problems were knocked out with this release. It is still a beta though and has issues so be prepared for that. Also if you do use the beta make sure you send the error reports when you get an error report or better yet, be active on the beta forums to report problems you have. I've heard people say that their cmud dies when they do x,y, z but unless Zugg knows about it, it's likely not going to get fixed before public release. Beta testing can be pretty frustrating though so you might just wait it out with your Zmud.

Threads like this make me nervous, I don't want to have to choose between Vista and playing lusternia if I were to get a new computer next year.

CMud is more stable than people think, really. Just have to be aware of its faults and work around them.

CMUD has done more than eat my variables or flub a timer here or there when I use it. I can crash 1.34 or 2.14a after less than a minute of use. I don't have time for workarounds any more. I spent more than two years just learning all the quirks in zMUD to build a half decent system. I'm not investing more time than is absolutely necessary to learn the CMUD way (meaning, I don't want the quirks, thanks).

Really? Have you posted that on the Beta forums? Lately I have been seeing less and less major bugs getting put up there for fixing. A repeatable bug as major as that definitely seems worthy of being reported to try to get to the bottom of it.
Unknown2007-12-04 02:07:52
I would love to point out that you should never EVER have Vista installed... that's my two cents.

Were it not to come with the computer. I might agree with you.

I post them on the forums when I can reproduce them. I submit them as crash dumps when I can't reproduce them. Zugg knows about them, though he may not be able to repair them quickly. Since he went multithreaded, he's had a lot more headaches.
I see plenty of nasty bugs still being reported on the forums, too, mostly by Vijilante.
My Vista runs very smoothly and only has minor issues with one or two non-important apps. My guess is that most people with major gripes over Vista are running low-level apps that were not meant for Vista, like virus scanners or spyware detectors. Maybe I'm just one of the lucky few, but I love my Vista, Aero and all. (As a web developer, I hate IE7, though, most definitely.)
P.S. Sorry for derailing this thread so badly.

Vista took a turn way south on me with one of the patches about four months ago. System crashes, randomly disabled right click, random inability to write to drive, otherwise very stable programs (IE7) locking up in conjunction with other system errors...bad stuff. Eventually the half-billion automatic error reports that I sent their way paid off and it's been fixed up.
I still can't blame the people waiting for SP1. It's in beta!
