You can't really compare the exaggerations of US violence to the exaggerations of violence in Israel. America is a lot bigger.
Watch your local news. (last night I just heard about a lady who was raped on the side of the freeway while changing her car tire)

My local news usually doesn't have much of anything. The crime rate here is incredibly low, and the only interesting situation we've had recently (a hostage situation) turned out to be a harmless schizo. Though I'm sure Israel is the land of puppies, kittens, and flowers, right?

How far is far enough for you? Something happening in the next city? Something happening in the next state?
Like it or not, the US is one country and your problems are a global problem.
Israel is no where near the land of puppies and all that crap (thank gods), but where I live (which is about 80 KM from Gaza where the current conflict is) life is just like everywhere else - Kids get bored and stab each other, junkies rub elderly people to buy drugs...

I have to agree with you on that one, but next time, put everything in and you'll get the answer:
"Gaza factory substitutes ammonia for CO2 in fizzy drinks"
Keep in mind though, that things like that you can find in other places as well...
How many toys were removed from US stores in the past couple of months after they found out the factory in China is using paint that contains lead to dangerous levels?
Israel is just as bad as any other place in the world, nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, and how often do you see New Hampshire in international for suicide bombings? (Never.) And Israel? (A lot.) And how many people think that Israel shouldn't exist? (A lot, Google it.) And New Hampshire? (None that I know of.) How many rockets have been fired into New Hampshire? (None.) How many rockets have been fired into Israel? (A lot.)
Regardless of your news sources, I'd say New Hampshire is safer than Israel. I'd even venture to say that Israel is quite dangerous.

I think an accurate comparison would involve population size and density. Israel is small and has about 7 million people, last I checked. America is frigging huge and has roughly 300 million. By having that many more people, America should have that much more crime, but it's likely still not as concentrated (crime per person or something, heh) as Israel, nor as violent (America typically doesn't have bombs and rockets going off anywhere within its borders).

Mexico and Canada are not exactly our enemies. Imagine if we had Iran or Taliban Afghanistan on our border. Israel is surrounded by countries which want its destruction. The same countries that hate Israel also hate the United States.

I'd argue that Israel is much safer (excluding the Palestinian Authority-controlled areas). My university is in a town that has crime almost daily - there was a strongarm robbery recently inside our main library. There isn't much in Israel. There is also hardly any gun violence.
EDIT: Decided to google crime statistics - for murder per capita, United States is #24. Israel didn't even make the list.

Perhaps it didn't have any data? (Doubtful ) Either way, crime is a lot more than murder, and danger is a lot more than crime. See: rockets, bombs (really ing dangerous!, not exactly in crime statistics). If you can't even go to parts of your country because they're getting bombarded with hostile explosives, then your country is dangerous. Now, I have nothing against Israel, and the cities and such probably are relatively safe, but let me have the last word, damn you.

ironically this is actually a current debate.
You see, the people in Sderot have been really lucky, and out of the some 2,000 rockets, only 8 or so have hit people. So the Palestinians are complaining that Israel is overreacting to the rocket attacks, since not many people are being hurt, and not much property is being damaged
So while the rockets and suciced bombers and very terrorfying aka scary, they aren't actually very dangerous (thanks to Israel's beefed up security)

hmm correction, 13 have died, not 8.
EDIT: Found an actual news source... 9 Israelists have been killed by 4,000 rockets.
See, not dangerous at all!
from an article today about the mayor of Sderot NOT resigning:
"Sderot lies several kilometres from the Gaza Strip and around 4,000 homemade rockets fired from the Palestinian territory have crashed on and around the town since the start of the Palestinian uprising in September 2000.
Nine Israelis have been killed by the rocket fire, according to an AFP count."

Are you staying at a place with internet access? Internet Cafes are not as common as they are in the US, but if you have a laptop with wireless, you can easily find a Cafe with free wireless access.

Really? When I was there I spent most of my time with access to wireless spots. I guess it depends where you are, and what you are doing.
Also, I can't think of a single internet cafe in my area (though we do have plenty of starbucks who are willing to overcharge you to search google )

Where we are isn't the worst part of PG.
Where I went to gradeschool in Southern PG was the worst. It was so bad scores went into SE DC.. southeast, the asshole of DC mind you, to get away....
/agree mostly with the DC/PG comment
Forren: someone I supervise is heading to Israel in the next couple days for a month almost. His name is Ben, can give you more info if you really want and I have no idea if he goes up to Hillel or does any campus activities of the sort.
Ildaudid2007-12-22 15:15:30
Aye southern PG county is much worse.
I lived in SE right by the PG Border, and people would steal cars from PG and ride them around in SE.
The wierd thing is, Montgomery Co, seems to be 100% safer (well prolly not actually) but it is such a large difference when you go from one county to the other.
