What are successful orgs supposed to do?

by Catarin

Back to Common Grounds.

Rants are overpowered.
Xavius2007-12-13 06:07:36
Hey, it's worth a shot. We've tried everything else. Temporary forum downtime to get energies focused back into the game?

Or, if you really want to have fun, turn off the common language and give everyone city/commune specific languages instead. If you want to talk to someone from another org, you have to go through the hassle of finding a racial translator. Then we can't rant at each other and can't expect each other to show anything other than mindless killing. When you expect it, it's not so bad!

That would really not be fun. One of the things I dislike about Avenger is that if you kill all the defenders, they all have status on you, then they can pick off the attackers one by one, and the attackers have to choose between watching the targeted allies die one at a time, or getting vengeanced for helping.

Edit: Defend would fix that, but still... no avenger off prime

QFT. I remember when Xanon did that -on prime-, right after the Crypt went up. Very difficult to manage. Would not like to see the Avenger on other planes.

As for what people are saying regarding shutting down the forums -- please do it. See what happens! No forum RP, no way to make opinions OOC unless by clans in game, no bias, and no place to make instant judgments on people. Maybe turn them off for a week? The rants section really doesn't help release anger... you're angry, not thinking clearly, make a post, feel better, but then you go back and read all these angry replies and it just makes you upset and hate people in-game (people who you likely have never interacted with). I definitely think we should try Lusternia without the forums.

And up the RP. Seriously, do you know how hard it is to get people to participate in stuff like plays? There is SO MUCH to do in Lusternia, but people don't really want to look at it. Participating in plays, hunting, questing, taking up a creative tradeskills, earning credits to lessons, working with your guild, interacting with others... there's a lot of 'regular' stuff that I find is really fun in Lusternia. Because it's like reality, but with a fantasy twist.

Anyway, that's just my two cents...

EDIT: Oh, did I mention bardics? That takes a lot of effort and research most of the time.

Lusty =/= Achaea, kthx. It's a nice idea, but there's really no RP for it. Even in Achaea, it's a perfect deus ex machina: you know this language because the gods plant the knowledge in your head when, and only when, you are an ally/citizen of that organization. When you leave it, you forget it.

We have it for races too, you know. I can speak all of the racial languages, just not at once.

Or skills. By choosing to learn something else, you become incapable of the simplest of tasks you knew for decades prior.

RP and knowledge have nothing in common in Lusty. tongue.gif

I like the idea of shutting down the forums for a bit.

I also like the idea of isolating languages! Makes for more RP, all that. Though inter-org coordinations would suck.

Isolating languages sounds like a neat idea. It would give bookbinders who could then serve as translators a nifty function.

Shutting down the forums is a thing of evil. A bad idea which must never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never come to pass.

I say just delete lack of rants.

I think this is one cause of dissatisfaction. People think they'll be able to use the area for what it looks like it's for (influencing Fae for minor golds, xp and power) and then get jumped and die and don't even get suspect to prevent it happening over and over again.

If people expect stuff, and don't get it, they're disappointed, disgruntled and more likely to give up and go play something else.

If you're not willing to budge on it, I can understand that, but I don't think enough has been done to propagate the idea that people aren't supposed to be able to go there and expect not to get killed for it.

I wonder what the difference would be if new players were taught that the Planes are, as we've always maintained, dangerous and untamed places. It seems that there has built up a level of expectation that the Planes should be safe except when raided, which I think is probably part of what has led to this frustration over conflict. Planes are intended to be sources of conflict and danger. Of course, people will always be upset to some degree over dying, but I don't think it's particularly honest to indoctrinate people into believing that "their" Planes are and should be safe havens.

Perhaps you're right, and we haven't done enough to propagate this concept. We can make it subtly more evident, through mob reactions and the like.
Forren2007-12-13 06:53:48
To sum up opinions:

Players are spoiled on Lusternia and get angry when they lose experience.
To support this, many skills exist to limit or remove experience loss, which makes players think not losing XP is the norm.
People want the ability to freely PK off-prime, have conflict, and should be responsible for not going overboard.
Problems come through either spoiled players or people going overboard in pking.

I'm not sure why the communes aren't telling newbies that the Avenger doesn't protect the ethereal. It's been this way from day one!

Maybe somewhere in a college/commune scroll before they go there?

Newbies shouldn't die in Faethorn or any other plane while doing the collegium quests, simply cause they have innocence (unless I'm completely wrong here and it doesn't work off prime?)
The problems with newbies dying there starts due to bad advice other "older" people give newbies to renounce their innocnece before they are actually ready for it.

I spoke with a newbie a couple of days ago, after he died by accidently walking into glom (the killer had a reason, but innocence would have stopped it non the less).
I asked why he renounced innocence in the first place and he said that someone in his guild told him to do it so he could hunt on the nexus world.
That person totally neglected to explain the consequences.
While you can just say that it's the person's fault, and that you give a proper warning before allowing them to renounce innocence, I think two things should be done to lessen that problem:
1. Not allow renouncing innocence until level 10 or 15 - it would stop the true newbies from renouncing it too early, and experienced players can just bash past that level fast enough in newton to renounce it.
2. Allow newbies with innocence to hunt on their nexus world, just like you allow them to do so in newton, loliprin and rats/weevils.

That's my two cents on that matter.
Rika2007-12-13 07:18:48
When people want to break rules, no abundance of rules will stop them. Similarly, when people want to play fair, no lack of rules will stop them. We need less of the former and more of the latter.

And don't close the forums. Think of poor Nejii!

EDIT: The existing avenger system has its own issues. Daedalion runs into prime Seren, gets hit, leaves, bleeds to death, gets suspect? WTF? That's not the only messed-up thing either.

You love to use me as an example for everything don't you?

There could be some incredible roleplay in orgs having their own languages.

But instead of doing the achaean-type thing, maybe pick it up a notch... when you leave an org, you are 'banished' from using the language and whenever you attempt to speak it, your words come out jumbled and you basically make no sense at all. So you can still choose to speak it, but if you do, it basically comes out jarbled and mispronounced. Or something.

I think it'd be a lot of fun RP for that type of thing.
Unknown2007-12-13 07:53:39
It doesn't realy make much sense for each city to have a language. They were all the same country up until recently.
Aison2007-12-13 07:57:36
I'm sure something could be worked out. Someone from Nil could come to Mag proper after being lost in Astral and give them the fruit of their language, and it could develop...

I'm bad at this :/.
Creslin2007-12-13 07:58:53
Celest should all speak merian.
