Isn't there a thing called battng or something which you can get a tailor to add to leather armour which allows it to be proofed like robes?
Yep.
Syntax: BATT
Cost: silk 100
On any leather vest, you can batt it with silk, making it a much more expensive
and desirable item. Batted vests can be proofed just like greatrobes (but do not
stack with greatrobes).
Unknown2007-12-16 21:51:43
But you can't enchant them, so the armor still kinda sucks.
Acrune2007-12-16 21:53:10
I've heard that leather can actually be comparable to robes if you make enough of them and pick the best. Can't say I can verify that though.

I don't know, to be honest. But, if there is, most people still wear robes anyway. And personally, I'd like to see less of this:
And more of this:

Think leather can get up to low 40s. (Maybe even 45ish)

nice pics rainydays. the guy in the orange robes looks odd
Aison2007-12-17 04:26:13
I agree with Rainy. I hate the idea of Bards and Monks running around in robes when they should be dressed in more fun things.
Make leather armour stronger and with more comms to even it out with greatrobes. And can they be custom-designed? (I'm not sure) If not, allow them to be! Roleplay!

Eldanien2007-12-17 04:33:36
Yeah, make them comparable. As is, there's no mechanical reason to choose leather armor over robes. For any guild.
Rika2007-12-17 06:48:05
Leather armour can be custom designed like other forging items. But if you make them any better, they will end up with being a better choice than scale, or maybe even chain. Not that either are used all that much.

So either do a masterwork leather set for high end leather, or just up the commodity costs and let them be better than scale/chain. It's not like anyone uses it short of warriors who haven't gotten their field plate yet, so I doubt any tears would be shed over the change.
Rika2007-12-17 07:54:21
Except our (read: Serenguard, at least) novices need to have armour provided to them.
I just think acrobats shouldn't be allowed to use robes for their skills to work as well as they do, as had always been written into the skill ABs

Boo! See pics.
It's even more true of bards. It just seems goofy, especially with everyone not a warrior pretty much wearing robes.
It's time to let something other than robes be a viable option. I'm sick of the land of bathrobes, especially on more physical classes. Not to mention that most robe descriptions aren't.... eh... "kick friendly". Not a problem for random shadowdancer or aquamancer, but for an acrobatic bard, or a monk of any kind? Yeah... just glad it's not a graphical game.
As for the novices? How would better leathers adversely effect them wearing chain or scale? Even as it is, some of them go straight from starting leathers to field plate- if you can cobble together the resources for a set of chain, with a little more investment in doing the same thing, you can get field plate.

I was always annoyed that there's no way of dressing in the traditional Jedi manner (Tunic, trousers, boots, sensible belt, robes) in Lusternia.

Japanese houshi - wear robes. (Leather is vile, to be handled only by eta.)
Japanese miko - wear robes. (See above.)
Nepalese bhikku - wear robes. (Leather is impure, a stain of death.)
Korean moksa - wear robes. (Leather is too tasty to make clothing out of.)
Hindi priests - wear robes. (You want me to do -what- to a brahma?)
Christian monks - wear robes. (Except for the odd knightly orders, which are more Knight than monk.)
Sanga, Vaishnava... robes. (Because saffron robes are stylish. See picture above.)
Some of those are a bit joking, but the basic truth remains. Monks wear robes. I could go on, but in no case I can think of are RL monks noted for leather attire as opposed to robes. Even in popular fiction, monks very seldom wear anything other than robes.
Ninja seems to stick out as not exactly fitting into the monk concept. But even then, you see them in cloth more often than you see them in anything else, as far as popular fiction goes. Historically, they were as opposed to dealing with leather as most other Japanese. And for those that weren't opposed (there were some Buddhist sects who weren't), then lamellar or even chain armor was far more likely.
As far as the game goes, I don't really care if a monk wears leather or robes. But the entire reason we use the word 'monk' or 'ninja' is to evoke certain meanings and ideas. For me, a monk wears robes.

And the vast swath of those monks aren't martial artists. Even the shaolin "robes" aren't robes in the sense that most of the descriptions of robes in Lusternia I've seen are.
I mean, seriously, are you going to kick someone in the head when wearing a robe like your typical western stereotype monk wears?
No.
It doesn't even have to be leathers. Just something with, you know...
pants
I mean, why all the hatin' on pants in this game? Either they're form fitted metal, or you're not wearing them. (RP wardrobes aside). Unless I skipped over the trouser-inquisition and mass leg-wear burnings the empire engaged in before Operation: Cosmic hope in the histories, this does not make sense.
If Chewbacca is a wookie then leathers should be a viable option.
Eldanien2007-12-17 13:21:37
I definitely don't have anything against pants, layering clothing, or making leather a viable alternative. I consider all of these good things. I particularly desire pants and shirts and even vests to be wearable with robes. I just don't think it fits to have robes taken away, though.
On a related topic, I'd like to see things like leather or even steel wrist and leg bracers be wearable by everyone, decorative rather than providing armor.

I would love to see bards wearing leathers over robes. It just seems like it would be more fun for them to dress up. Bards are, to me, flamboyant, colourful, jovial, and usually bright (and I speak generally in celest/seren bard cases). Their clothes should reflect this.
I hope the Admin get a little clue on this and help us to make our dreams possible .

Right, I have very little creativity, but even I really feel creatively limited when I have to wear robes to compete. Of course I have splendor, so no matter what happens to leather, I'll be sticking with that. So I'd prefer if robes had its own clothing layer between normal clothes (shirt/pants) and outerwear (coats/cloaks), that way I can wear lots of fancy clothes
