My equipment turned to dust a long time ago. I can forge up to Scale, and want to put my warkit back together again. But I wanted to make something of my own pattern to get back into hunting, and I can't find out how. Could someone point me in the right direction of putting together a pattern to forge something?

Not sure how much detail you're looking for, but HELP 21.5 has some basic guidelines. HELP 21.6.4 also shows the commodity requirements.
Since you already have the Forging skill, you can see the information included in existing patterns (name, dropped appearance, description, and so forth). Make sure your design has all of those, then send it to the trademaster of a forging cartel in a letter or message or the like. The trademaster handles it from there.

Ok, thanks. Now that I've got that worked out, I'll draw up some designs and send them out.
EDIT: Tricky bit is, I've realized, I can't really hunt until I get this done. I've got a suit of leather and nothing else, so I'm left to influence Tosha to finance my suit while I submit my designs.
EDIT: Are polearms used for anything? I can't say as I've ever seen them in use.

Polearms are just as good as any other weapon. There's a speed, precision, damage and average type. Of course, you're better off using whatever you specialized knighthood with.

Who uses shields and daggers?
FIRST DESIGN DRAFT
Item: Shirt Type: Chain Org: Silverblade
Commodities: steel 15 iron 15 leather 12 cloth 3 bluetint 1 yellowtint 1
IMPORTANT: The main noun of this item MUST use this name: SHIRT
Appearance:
a camouflage shirt of boiled leather and chain
Dropped:
A camouflage shirt of boiled leather and chain lies here, resembling a small bush.
Examined:
Chain mail forged from a thrice-beaten amalgam of iron and steel, giving it a swirling finish, has been painstakingly riveted to an undercoat of boiled leather for additional padding and protection. A single round plate of hammered iron and steel is riveted in the center of the chest, etched with a rampant bear. Sheets of tattered burlap died a mottled green hang from the shoulders and waist, allowing the wearer to blend in with the undergrowth.

Um... Ok, I actually put that up for review. Does it seem suitable?

Might want to fix the "camouflage" typos.

Done. (I think the old way was the British spelling... not sure.)
