Mornington Crescent (the game)

As far as I can remember we haven't had a game of Mornington Crescent on the forums, so I figured it would be fun to start one. We'll be using the regular map (here, for those who don't have it memorized) and the 1974 Canterbury ruleset. (In case you don't remember, 1974 Canterbury prohibits the use of the "About Face" maneuver and also makes a number of minor variations on past rules like eliminating those pointless green chips, which I always found a pain to keep track of. Do remember that this version doesn't include the ability to make a Hook Spin, which wasn't added until 1978, so please remember not to use that.)

That said, I'm going to go ahead and start at Ladbroke Grove, collect my purple acorn, and set my compass to point east in preparation to begin a Green Light Confusion, which should take effect three turns from now. I know it's a bit of a risky maneuver but glass cannon has always been my style (and if you're looking to stop that Confusion, you might want to think again...!)

Feel free to go ahead and jump in if you want to play.

I havn't gone into google yet, but I'm almost 90% certain that you are making up all that stuff and there is no such game tongue.gif

Wikipedia says there is such a game. I just don't get it.

I choose Piccadilly Circus, mostly in preparation for countering your Confusion with a Senescent Progression running south-northwest, if need be. Best to play it safe now, but do take note that this also sets me up for a Martian Revolt, which of course sets up Mornington Crescent in fourteen turns if unopposed, as we all know. Sorry if I'm being a bit out of it, I'm more used to the Queen's Rules variant of the game.

Are you allowing the Hammersmith Jink? It's key to one of my endgame strategies. If not, I still might play, but if so, you're on!
Shamarah2007-12-24 21:57:30
I can't believe that you uncultured people have never heard of Mornington Crescent! It's really fairly simple, though it takes some time to master. The easiest way to learn is to jump in; just pick a station from the map (though I wouldn't recommend anything on the orange or blue lines for beginners, and probably not the yellow-green either) and make a move.

Yeah, we'll allow it. I've never really understood why so many people take offense to that one; I generally find the Steelsmith works even better than the Hammersmith in many circumstances yet people don't complain about it.

I think it's due to how some people use it in conjunction with the Merriweather Split. The Steelsmith is effective, but it doesn't have the same sort of debilitation-inducing climax as the Hammersmith-Merriweather Plow.

Though, Steelsmith on a southern station is particularly enjoyable when playing against a large number of Gregorian Jump whoring blue-liners.

Still, it is kind of sad that so few people here know what it is. I personally enjoy more advanced games, so I dunno if I'm in or not.

Well, I might as well, although I would prefer to play in a variation with Hook Spin included...

I'll start at Knightsbridge, and collect the Broken Stopwatch. Since It's the first round, I'll begin preparing a Candlelight Barricade.

Shamarah, I hope you know what your doing - I've seen people, many times, use a similar start and just fall flat on their faces. As you've probably notice, I prefer a more defensive start.
Unknown2007-12-24 22:17:11
Oh fine. I'll start at Green Park, but I'll skip taking the Rusty Lantern so that I can initiate a Battersby Riot, which spawns an Orderly Marmaduke in two turns which will last two more turns after that. I think that effectively nerfs your GLC, Sham, even if it cost me a turn.
Fain2007-12-24 22:50:04
Hmm. You play a different version to the one I am familiar with. The game map does not figure the Jubilee line post its 1999 extension to Stanmore. I'm not sure I'd be able to play without the Canning Town gambit.
Xavius2007-12-25 01:13:11
You all talk far too much for a strategy game. "I'm entangling you now in preparation for the demesne tick, at which point you will be sapped unless you tipheret out and throw your own web at me! Ahaha--aaah! I'm webbed!"

Ealing Broadway green east, ticketless.
Shamarah2007-12-25 02:27:14
Come, now, it's much more interesting when you gloat over your strategies.

That said I'm going to go ahead and jump to White City, which ought to counter that stupid Marmaduke because of having an equal number of letters in the name, although it will push my GLC back by one turn for switching lines.

Tottenham Court, in reverse-trespass.

If only because that threatens a Hennesey Loop, which quite handily takes care of that gambit, Xavius. Of course, I'll pick up the francophone token as well.
Xavius2007-12-25 07:44:28
I don't play gambits. I grief like the grieferfish. tongue.gif

Acton Town, collect a blue guitar, begin blue sabotage (3 turns).
Unknown2007-12-25 07:55:50
I always get so confused by this game sad.gif. Just to say it before I get demolished, I think I'm out of my league, in terms of player skill. I'm used to more casual games...

Anyway, Hyde Park Corner, I'll engage the picture-frame maneuver. And of course, collect germanic token.
Unknown2007-12-25 14:34:42
Leicaster Square. I invoke Forfeit First Turn to pick up two more Courier Tokens (I'll need them, since Dyr and I went to same Mornington Crescent strategy school, evidently) and place Wellington Corkscrews at Holborn and Piccadilly Circus (the one at Piccadilly oriented west and the one at Holborn east, of course). I point my compass south.
Unknown2007-12-27 15:38:06
Everyone sees the Corkscrews come out first round and decides to forfeit, eh? Can't say I blame you.
