Okay, right now, I could vent about...hmm...six to seven things. Should I post them all neatly in seperate threads? If I wait a little more, I can surely get to about 10 or 12, should I post them then? People could choose a whole thread-page out of things I am venting about!

Being one of the main people who was campaigning for it to be closed... I wouldn't have a problem if it was re-opened, but I think it would be better if it was kept to smal, stupidl rants thread. It's understandable Sally doesn't want to create her own topic because she's pissed off Joe is selling her sparkleberries for a higher price than he told her, but I think it's pointless to have a "Rant" topic in an entire forum dedicated to ranting.
This would involve a lot of self-control on the people posting, but it wasn't the small, everyday rants that I thought were the problem. The problem is that as one thread it's very difficult to moderate because that involves moderators having to wade through lots of insignificant posts to get to the ones that are personal attacks or should be their own threads.
I agree with Visaeris, you can create new topics for a reason, and if you are ranting about something you think is a big problem you should make a bigger post about it. Lack of rants thread discourages that because it's easier to just write a quick sentence rant rather than start your own topic.
It was really just a thread that everyone trolled, because sadly it wasn't possible to just not read it because that's where all of the issues tended to be discussed. It started out as a whimsical little thread, but people started taking things way too seriously and jumping down everyone's backs. I think everyone forgot what the definition of a "rant" was.

Post threads about things that would provoke interesting, amusing, and/or ranty discussions.
The rest you can get over

Naw, see, that was the purpose of LoR. I could post about stuff nobody cares about, and move on. Now it's slowly building up, and soon I'll create a topic about "BLAHBLAH WOKE THE SLUMBERING THUNDER. I WILL RAPE YOUR CATS AND EAT YOUR DOGS!"
That all wouldn't happen if I had Lack of Rants, see!

Opening the lack of rants thread is fine. I used it as a stress relief, but it gets stressful when people read rants and jump all over you for it. It was more flaming people for ranting than actual ranting. If people will cut that out, it's a great place to let some of your steam go.

This goes along with "some things and some people deserve to be met with negativity." If you want stress relief without feedback, I recommend blogging.

I also don't think the admins should act or effect change based on what they read in there - that only encourages disagreement in the thread used to show that a poster's rant isn't backed by everyone, and encourages people to read the thread that's impacting their game even though they don't want to.
Actually, I don't even read the Idiots forum. I recognize that is it a place to vent rather than a place for anything constructive, hence I don't bother reading. If a topic merits admin attention, it should really be placed in the General or Ideas forums.

Well, if it's permantely banned, people can always go here. Might actually breathe some life into again

Except the problem is that with LOR the big rants and the little rants get posted in there. Instead of people posting big rants and getting over little ones, they just dump it all into one festering cesspool of terrible

Don't you love diving in that pool as much as I do?

Jack, you should put that in your CV. "- created a forums thread that got over 6k posts and movements arose around it."
I don't care much as I wasn't really following the thread but I'll vote for opening because I'm against censorship-like activities in general and I don't believe in validity of reasons for closing it. Like others said, negativity does not come from a single forum thread, if you find it instigating there's most likely something wrong with you.

That's a horrible thing to say, honestly. If someone is venting, they don't 'deserve' to be flamed. Mentalities like that made Lack of Rants so unpleasant. There is feedback, and then there is rude, insulting, and condescending replies that scream about being FORCED to read and the "idiocy of your rant was just too much for me to not respond and call you names." Yes, you were one of those people sometimes, maybe that's why you think it is okay. It's not okay. If people would understand that the 'lack of rants' thread is for letting off steam in the heat of the moment and not freak out like everything said on the thread is a huge deal and a forum jihad against someone/guild/group of people, things would be a lot more enjoyable.

May I just pipe in to say this might be the stupidest, most insidious, most viciously wrong, most horrifyingly appalling thing in popular wisdom? Because, really, it's wrong, it's stupid, it's downright Orwellian. Think about it. Our civilisation is built on the right of saying things that aren't nice; any mother that actually says something to her son is being... well, I'm not going to throw the words "child abuse" around like so much stale confetti, but she wouldn't be acting like a good mother at all.

If you don't want to read the bloody thread, then don't read it, just open it for the rest of us who enjoyed it.
I'm going to start like 15 mini-threads with all different subjects about each thing that ticked me off that day, and we'll see how many people acually enjoy that. "Homigod someone flooded my sphere and killed me." "I got ganked in faethorn " "Butter spit in my honeycake!".

That's what they are basicly telling us to do, if I'm going to get forum banned for doing it.. well geez.

They're telling us all to suck up the petty rants and keep it to ourselves, since once small rant turns into a horde of hate, apparently
Although, it is called the IDIOTS section for a reason

Honestly i don't care, I generally used the LoR to rant about something i thought important to me maybe once in a while read it but for the most time i ignored it. I think if people could use it properly it would be nice to have. But sadly people always cause trouble and problems so i don't think its a LoR's problem more of a people problem that is honestly unfixable.
Xenthos2007-12-29 22:25:38
I concur with the "We're all capable of making our own decisions and don't need moderators to tell us what to think" movement. The point of moderation is not to stop discussion (which is what was said, many times, this move was intended to do-- stop the lots of "little rants"). The big ones were already being cut off into their own topics, so that point is moot.
Arak2007-12-29 22:59:14
I personally can't stand the existence of any of these extended topics, be they Lack of Rants, Lack of Raves, or any other gigantic thread in which most of the posts are pointless. All meaning is lost in these threads. I have tried on several occasions to try and read these threads, and what it amounts to is I go back several pages from the last one, reading all the posts on the way, and still don't find anything that actually interests me or means anything significant. But, you might say, that's the point of these threads. The problem is, however, that people with serious issues or comments that should be addressed are lost forever in the hundreds of pages of meaningless trash. On top of this, new threads that are actually interesting barely ever appear anymore, because so many people have been taken in by the giganto-topics. So, instead of being heard regarding important issues, people instead have their ideas skimmed by one or two people before they disappear in a torrent of flames and pointless small-talk. So, what I'm trying to say is, these huge topics aren't topics at all: the point of a forum is to organize the way people discuss things and these threads only serve to remove any semblance of organization from the discussions. And that is why they should be banned.
