I wouldn't be worried about inappropriate content. He's probably old enough to handle it, or will get over it really fast.
I'd worry about the addiction potential. If I'd sunk as many hours as I did into these games during my formative years... I would be doing a whole lot worse now. He should worry about doing well in school and developing social skills at this age. He'll have plenty of time to acquire bizarre hobbies once his mind's formed.

You know, I'd probably want to start him out in a fairly fun, easy environment... (so no throwing him into the Nihilists)... but other than that, I don't see why a kid that age can't play.
Besides, if he's not mature enough to deal with it, most of the time they'll just go away and you won't have to worry about it anyway.
That is, at least, my two cents.
P.S. That said, Celest could use some more bards!

QFT.
I know that I got some really weird habits from starting to MUD a little too early imo.
That said, I'm finally recovering from it and gaining some better habits.

I started mudding when I was 14. The addiction didn't disrupt my behavior until I was 20

That's where the parents would come in (or the bossy older siblings. ). No kid should have an unlimited amount of time in front of any box on a school night. TV or computer (excepting doing homework on it, of course). Cause, homework and studying has to be done and all that.

And that's a skill that you should learn early on, preferably before you get to college... so that might be a good learning tool in that respect.

I've been mudding since I was around 10 or 11, and my mom seriously believes (and I actually agree with her), if I didn't have MUDs, I probably would have killed myself.
She literally thanked the friend who introduced me to MUDs.
I had an unhappy early-age, dealing with internal issues.

Nirrti's point aside, age isn't a huge deal. The best secretary in the Achaean priest guild has a nine year old player. Nejii's pretty young and he's far from too immature to play. He needs to be 13 to legally register his character, though. That's an issue of federal law.

Nejii's like 17...

I wouldn't worry about him seeing too many inappropriate things, or getting too much stress. I played Lusternia for months without any problems, even addiction. It wasn't until I became a Secretary, then Admin that things really started to go wrong-- too many hours playing, too much stress, yada yada. If you think he can handle the fun parts of the game, I'd say he should be alright.

Noone can actually give you the answer, Myndaen. Only you know your brother and it's your call.
My only advise for you is to let everyone (I guess it's only easy for people on forums) know who your brother plays so they know they are dealing with 13 years old kid.

When Shiri told me how old he really was, I about fell over in shock, since I figured him to be at least mid-20's (think he was like 16-17 when I asked)
Also, just keep your brother away from 4chan and Encyclopedia Dramatica and he'll be fine
