Ok, I just got home from the midnight release of Cloverfield. I thought it was completely awesome. For a more indepth review see below the Spoiler tag.
It was definetly kind of Blair Witch like - what with it being done up like a home video recording and all that. But it was way, way better. Cause, honestly, monsters rampaging through Manhattan eating people and worse is WAY more scary than mysterious bundles of sticks and teeth. And kids trying to get to their friends and get out of the city while avoiding being eaten, way more heroic/sympathetic than a bunch of dorkswho refuse to throw down their broken compass and follow the stream down to the river and the river to the nearest town.
Anyway, I was extremely pleased with how the movie went. I really liked that the audience, for the most part, only ever got glimpses of the creatures cause the guy holding the camera was too busy trying to get away from them to sit there and focus. I loved how they were clueless the whole time, cause it made it more real. In most monster movies the main characters somehow wind up with the inside story along the way - they make friends with the scientists they happen to run into, or the soldier confesses the dark secret or something, or they started out with the knowledge anyway. But these kids never got more than a glimpse of what was going on, which made it way more realistic.
Of course, I wish the movie answered more of my questions! But the same guy who did Lost did this, so I had a feeling I'd leave the theatre with oodles of unanswered questions.
The one I really wonder is... why'd the army give the critter the code name Cloverfield in the first place??

A friend and I went to go see it. It was very well done, very suspenseful, and very intense. Haven't seen a movie in a while that was so visceral, and at the same time surreal. I really think unanswered questions are what make sci-fi great, because they keep you guessing and thinking about the movie long after the actual experience.
Kinda wish I stuck around until after the credits ended, I hear there is a cool scene that ties the movie together and makes it a little more satisfying...

I really loved this movie, it was creepy and sad, and heart wrenching, and also, at the strangest times, a bit funny.
But also..was there really an End Credits scene that tied it together?
Have any of you seen the rock that falls into the ocean at the end of the movie? (Before the credits) My friend pointed out to me that during the end scene where it flashes back to the couple on the ferris wheel, in the top right, a small rock/meteorite falls from the sky and into the ocean. We're sure about this, as we knew some people in the theater and they rewound it and we actually saw it and verified.
Also, did anyone else think the monster would be perfect as a Soulless God? Big and nasty with chunks that fall off of it and then move on and kill things, and that crazy ass maw, and all the legs and crap, but with the slightest look of intelligence in its eyes.

I have to admit I fell for those viral marketing ads a while back, they were just so well made. I can't wait to see this movie!!!

I didn't notice it. I didn't pay attention to much in the background other than to note that they were at Coney Island and all. Mostly I was watching the kids cause I was still feeling sad they'd died.
My friend had noticed it and told me about it though. I'm going to go see it again prolly and will be looking for it along with some other details that I missed. (like apperently the size/shape of the monster changed several tmes. I didn't notice this, but I'm willing to admit I might've missed it). Plus after the credits there is supposed to be something that if not ties it together at least leaves the options open for a sequal! And I'm down with that!

That's exactly what I was going to write. Raiha and I went and saw this movie yesterday, and we both thought it was amazing, I was leaning forward in my seat the entire time. The characters and the setting and the feel of the movie completely captured me. I've not cared so much about what was happening to the characters in a movie in a long, long time. I think visceral is the perfect word to describe it.
Not to mention the monster ended up being amazing, and nothing like Godzilla like I was afraid of. I also loved the ending of the movie. It was so sad and emotional, yet I felt Rob and Beth were able to obtain some kind of closure. And although it was very open ended, I didn't feel like it left us hanging.
Can someone describe for me what the scene was that followed the credits? I waited until the credits were over, but I didn't see anything.
The thing about the meteor being in the background is pretty awesome, although I was fond of the theory that it came from beneath the ocean! It just made sense, because the creature was very slimy looking, and the first thing it destroyed was the Statue of Liberty, so I was thinking it had rose out of the ocean there.

Well, I didn't stay for the whole credits. It's so annoying - when I sit through credits at movies, nothing. When I leave during the credits, I find out there was something after!
Anyway, my friend said that there were voices saying things after the credits. Like the camera was still recording even after it was buried, but it still picked up sound, you know? It's what my friend said that these voices said that give me hope for something of a sequal anyway. But I'm gonna go see it again and wait this time to hear it myself.
And as for the critter coming from the ocean... well, the 'rock' landed in the ocean... so maybe whatever it was hatched and grew up there, or maybe some radiation from the rock mutated some sea creature or something. Anyway, it did come out of the water cause that's where the rock landed. That's my take on it anyway.

I saw this today, and I liked how the characters weren't the main ones fighting it, or somehow they had all this knowledge of the creature. It turned out to be one of those freaky action survival horror films, and it was quite good. I think though, that nearly the same thing could have been accomplished without the crazy camera.
If you get motion sickness, or have a headache previous to entering (which I did ), I'd question seeing it, but it turned out to be a neat little (i.e. short) movie.

I just got home from seeing it today, I'm going to throw my hat in with the yaysayers and give this film a big thumbs up. My favorite part was probably

Also, I missed the scene after the credits too. Any chance we can get a summary from someone who DID see it?
the part where the girl who was bitten exploded in a bloodspray more satisfying than any seen since Alien.
The only problem I had with this movie was
how they sold out in the end and gave you a full-frontal detailed view of the monster, in daylight. Ruined the whole mystery of the monster for me. I could've lived with the decent shot they gave of it getting bombed while they were in the helicopter.

Going to go see it in just a little while with Bellarin. We'll stay till the credits go, if there is anything, I'll let you know.
I hope this is as great as you guys say it is!

But it was a home movie type deal. It makes sense for the camera to be all crazy cause, well, the guy holding it was running like crazy.
But then, I totally don't get any sort of motion sickness so maybe the cons of such things don't outweigh the pros for me.

That was pretty crazy, and awesome.
Sitting through the credits while having to pee really bad, however, was not so awesome for a two second audio clip, stating there is probably a sequel.

That reminds me of me and a friend of mine, who saw the movie, hashing out the movie the next day. I was talking about how I'd known Rob and Beth were going to die, but I kept hoping they wouldn't and all. My friend was like, "Yeah, I felt bad for them, but since I also kind of figured they were going to die, and I had to pee reeeeally badly, part of me was kind of wanting them to just hurry up and die so I could go pee."
Of course, keep in mind that neither of us at that point knew about the sound clip after the credits.

The fact that one of the girls gets out in a helicopter gives opportunity for a sequel (or did she die and I not see?)
This was an absolutely amazing movie, I loved it so much. It was so graphic, not just visually but audibly. The sounds were grotesquely amazing. I really felt the whole movie was worth it, and am looking to buy it. I didn't stay to the end credits and didn't notice anything, but now that it's been mentioned, I'm going to search youtube for it. I can't wait for the dvd to come out, I want to see the making of stuff so badly!!
Snaithy2008-02-02 14:04:56
I saw it last night and was very impressed by it. The film was really intense and kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through, the fact that it was so believable and surreal - you could really imagine something like that happening and thats how you would see it all unfold..rather than the audience being told everything about it.
Aye I think the lass in the helicopter did get away...my first thoughts were "Oh damn they're gonna see her explode" but it never happened.
I also missed the rock splashing into the water even though I was looking for something to happen to clarify what the hell that thing was. I knew there'd be something at the end of the credits but everyone else was getting a little restless and we had to go catch a bus
