So, my school has decided to block of most ports. After speaking a bit with the IT-responsible at my school, I might be able to convince him to open up the port so that I can play Lusternia. But... he wants to know why I need this port (as in, a bit more spesific than Lusternia, though I've got no other clue at what he actually wants) and what traffic that should be expected from opening the port.

Use port 2003. It also works, unless it has also been blocked.

What I used to do from school when I played a mud on port 4000 is connect home on port 23 (it wasn't blocked) to a linux box in my basement, from which I could telnet freely.

The above are good suggestions, but you should also consider the possibility that playing a game from school (even a supercool, intelligent, social game like Lusternia) may get you in trouble with IT and/or the administration.

Hum. I'll try using that other port. It might work.
I can't use your suggestion though Forren. Even if I had the equipment, this is a boarding school, and the closest open port available to me is 90 minutes away. Thanks for the suggestion though.
And I've been playing Lusternia from here the last six month (except when I visited home) and not gotten any trouble at all, so I don't think that will be a problem.

Just telling IT that you're getting telnet traffic through it should make them happy. It's not like a ton of information transfer and there's no way to do any kind of torrenting through it or anything if they shut it down just for telnet traffic.
That is, if they don't mind gaming there in general. I went to a school that hated gaming... so they shut down all the ports from gaming on purpose... jerks...

Well, looks like I've got things sorted out, so too bad for you, you're not rid of me yet.

Thanks. It's nice to be back. Too bad I didn't make it in time to the Seal of Nature contest. That's the one I really wanted to try, and even had a chance at. Oh well, those things happen. Now to check if there are any new things that has happened to the Celestines while I've been gone.
