4. Build a massive Spirit Plane, which is a plane I've been wanting to see more of since Tosha first came out...
5. Souls can SPIRIT SHIFT, bringing them to the Spirit Plane, where they can hunt/influence in a modified manner. Winning against mobs or completing quests gives mana. Souls can also shift back to where their spirits were originally located.

GO TO HELL AND DIE YOU SON OF A BASTARD.
The ABSOLUTELY last thing Lusternia needs is Imperian's dodgy death system converted for over here.

What should happen when you die, is you get strung up to one of those big wheels, and the fates throw darts at you, if you get hit in any of the limps you lose them permeantly, and if you get hit in the head perma death, if they miss you rezz with no loss.

RATS! Foiled again...
@Dag: Maybe give every org a way to get onto the spirit plane while "alive", and so long as you have health (Are not actually dead in the prime plane) you won't lose mana and the quests and kills give karma and experience?

The real question is, why do you want to force tedious things on people so they can get back to the game? And why do you feel that's a 'good idea'?

Note that I did include ways for the current resurrection skills to be applied to this system and speed it up a good bit. And if someone doesn't want to deal with the so-called tedious process, they can willingly sit back and lose their mana and suffer the same XP loss as a praying death in less time. Or they can spend 5 minutes walking back to their rez point and suffer only part of the loss, or quest for 15 minutes and make back the XP that would have taken them maybe an hour of bashing to make up.
And this is only food for thought... not to be taken all too seriously. I always liked Imperian's system, so I just took that as inspiration.

Imperian's system is neat the first time.
Then it gets really, really old. Fast.

Disclaimer: I read (skimmed) up to page 12 and then just hit the little ">>" page button.
I'm not sure what to say about the xp situation. I rarely die, because I am exceedingly cautious when I play. I bash areas meant for people 10 - 20 levels lower than I am during off-hours, and I usually have a meld up so I can sense when any Mag might drop in, with the sole exception of novices (NWHO is my friend), and I usually stop and run back to Celest after that point. I'm very jumpy that way. I'm level 70 for my trouble, after roughly 25 days of play (a good majority of it spent training novices and other social interaction), and it'll probably take me twice the time to get to 80 as it did to get to where I am. I do sometimes defend against raids, but very rarely because a) the Mag raiders quite frankly scare me, b.) I have no combat system, c) I don't have Conglutinate, only Vitae, and d) I'm not altogether fond of peekay in general.
Based on that, I wouldn't mind whatever system the admins decide to implement, even if it means that nothing changes. I can handle dying occasionally from bashing (which I've yet to die from), and I avoid PK whenever possible because I know I can't handle that. If a stat loss & xp penalty were put in effect, I would probably hang around Celest and train novices (I wouldn't even mind skill loss if it were implemented, so long as I had MindBlast/Staff to deal with the... special novices. ).
Now, I do agree with Malicia's point (soo many pages back) about how xp loss isn't the main concern with novices and I disagree with Forren about mage combat being cheap. It's not until you get Staff, and that takes gold for credits for the average player. Most of the novices I've dealt with are intimidated by the sheer amount of gold they'd need to spend to do moderately well in PvP: salves, herbs, potions, armor (though that's generally useful for everything), et cetera. And I also agree with the point that there are other things to fix/worry about with the game than tweaking how death works.
I do like the new idea, it's certainly something that the other IRE games don't have, but I also wouldn't mind if we keep the system we have now. The only thing I really wouldn't want is increasing xp loss on death, because then I'd go back to bashing rats out of sheer terror.
That's my two cents.

The affliction thing sounds like World of Warcraft, except that in WoW, you only get the penalty if you rezz with a spirit healer rather than running as a spirit to your corpse. I hate XP loss for death, especially when you really can't avoid being killed if you're trying to defend a place like Nil or Earth and you're a mediocre fighter like myself. I would honestly avoid defending if I thought I could get away with it, but then I'd feel really guilty later...I just really hate going up there knowing that I'm just going to get killed and lose XP. I'd be a lot more motivated and eager to participate in conflict and defense though if hard-earned experience wasn't on the line.

Hard earned experience?
Bashing isn't particularly difficult, it's just repetitive.
Eliminating any sort of permanent penalty for dying would be a very, very bad idea; for reasons that have been expressed in the last 18 pages.
I feel you when you say that it's frustrating just going up there knowing for certain that you will die, but I think the frustration there is more in the sense of powerlessness than in the loss of experience, which isn't that hard to recoup unless you're extremely high level.

That's true...part of my frustration also lies in the fact that all the bashing spots for my level are either always bashed out (Grey Moors, for example) or I'll get attacked for hunting there (Bondero Bay). I've tried some Undervault, but I'm having a bit of a rough time down there, and I really hate asking for help bashing, not that I really have any good, high-leveled friends I could ask.
Or maybe I'm just impatient. Dunno.

It isn't that you are just impatient.
Gaming has changed in the past 10 years, and the concept of losing xp from dieing just doesn't have the same feel to it as it used to.
