Okay, so I'm getting reeeaaallly tired of using Nexus and I need to know which client I should be using instead. I'm an impoverished college student, so I would rather get a free one if I can, but would consider buying something if it's not too ridiculous. I use the pop-up editor thing like every ten minutes, so I need a client that would somehow allow me to use that. I would like to be slightly less sad at hunting and combat. So...
Make my decisions for me, please.

Mush its easy on lag, free systems out there and for 20 credits which is like 2 weeks of non constant bashing you can by eths client

MUSHclient is probably the best free client. You can use the IMTS/LMTS mapper module for your speedwalking, and MudBot (part of IMTS/LMTS) has an editor built into it for news posts and such. The downside to MUSHclient is that it's not quite as user-friendly as some other clients, so if you're not already familiar with the concepts and how to write code, the learning curve can be pretty steep. Ask lots of questions, though, and you could do well with it.

It depends on what you mean by ridculous in terms of cost. The latest version of CMUD is $29.95. You can try it for free for 30 days and it does have the pop-up window for editting. It is user friendly and easy to get started with. You can also get a comprehensive free Lusternian system for it.
Zmud costs $34.95 and if you buy that, for the time being you can get CMUD for free. Unless you use IMTS/LMTS (mudbot) with it, there is no pop-up editor. There are no free systems for it currently though there are several that cost credits. While I would recommend buying it if you can afford the extra $5 as it gets you two products for one but I wuoldn't really recommend devoting too much time learning how to work with Zmud. Zmud is no longer being worked on and all attentino from the developer is on CMUD now. You may hear some people say that CMUD is not stable yet or can't be used for complex things and maintain stability but this is not true. For your purposes it will likely work just fine.
If you cannot afford $30 or so for a client Mushclient is probably the most powerful alternative. As has been said though, you will need to already know or learn how to code as iti s not user friendly. If you want a free client that's not quite as powerful but can be made to do most anything you would need, you can try MUD Master or Mud Master 2000. The latter is more user friendly and the former is a very fast console based client. They're not as common for IRE people to use but they work fine, are less of a steep learning curve then Mushclient, and are free.

The pop-up editor thing is only partially true. Both zMUD and CMUD have a very nice text editor built into the client that you can use for posting things to the game's editor. It doesn't inherently load any existing text through ATCP yet, but I believe Zugg may add this feature to CMUD one day.
Also, my zMUD system will be made freely available (without support) once my CMUD system becomes my primary system. I just need Zugg to take care of a few data corruption issues in CMUD before I make the switch, so it'll be another month or two yet it seems.

I am assuming that when she says she uses nexus and would like a pop-up editor she is looking for something that, like nexus, will pop up an editor window she can type in without dealing with the in-game editor. While zmud has an editor it does not pop-up when you go into the game's editor. In CMUD it does.
And your zmud system isn't free now sooo, it's accurate to say there are no free systems available for zmud at this time

I wasn't saying you were wrong, exactly, just that there's more to it and more coming soon.

Quoted for Truth.
MUSH is a good client and as stated, it is free, and it wouldn't take TOO much of in game money to buy enough credits to get a system on it. If you're not looking to spend money, get MUSH.
If you're looking to spend a little bit of money, get cMUD. I used zMUD for a while and was pretty happy with it, my guess is that cMUD is probably just as good. In terms of systems for it, as stated above my Catarin, she has a free cMUD going around. Most of the system developers for zMUD (IE: Forren, Murphy and Zarquan) have dropped their zMUD developing for cMUD. THo' they'll still be more then happy to sell their zMUDs to you, it won't get updates as they've moved onto cMUD. Although I have no idea how far they are on building they're cMUDs.
