Down with purses!

So I'm getting to the stage where I'm investing in a few credits to bring up some skills and maybe nab me one of those shiny artifacts or two. I'm browsing the list of available artifacts, and one of them caught my eye: the parafilament purse. It seems like a very useful artifact that can regenerate its cost over time, and I really want to get it when I save up the credits, but there's one problem: it's a purse.

I don't want to wear a purse. I would be ashamed, as a manly, rugged man, to walk outside carrying a purse on me. Sure, if I wanted to, I can fork out some extra credits to change the description, but it'll still be tagged as a purse in my inventory. I know there are elite fighters out there who wear purses, fairy wings, and tiaras to optimize their combat potential, but I always make fun of them when they're not there, secure in the knowledge that I'm more manly than they are even though they can kill me in 2 seconds flat. If I buy a purse, this will no longer be possible.

My suggestion: Can we please, please, pleeeease have an artifact that duplicates the effect of the purse without actually being a purse?

That is all. Excuse me while I go bench 200 pounds with my moustache.

You know it's a really modern thing to consider purses as a female only accessory. laugh.gif

Well, the *only* way to get any sort of a purse in-game is this specific artifact (as far as I can remember off of the top of my head at least)-- so while it may challenge your OOC sensibilities, to an IC character it really shouldn't present much of a problem. There's no gender-sensitivity to it as an in-game object.

That said, if they implemented this they'd probably have to deal with a number of people asking for a free trade from one to the other. Not sure they'd actually be interested in dealing with that.

Artifacts already reset, and are non-decaying, but you may still customise
their appearance. WARNING: the cost of customisation does not increase artifact
tradein value (see HELP ARTIFACT_TRADEIN).
Xenthos2008-03-06 20:10:07
He already mentioned the customization issue-- while you can change its appearance, the base identifier would still have to be "purse" (though he could make it a "manly red leather purse"!)

Manly + Purse = SYSTEM ERROR PLEASE REBOOT

It could be 'a macho man purse' roflmao.gif

Maybe to your OOC self, but there's actually no issue with it at all in-character. It's no different than a ring (which everyone wears), or a cloak, or a suit of armour / greatrobes.

Purses really did used to be fairly unisex:

Iago:
Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls.
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands;
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
And makes me poor indeed.
Othello Act 3, scene 3, 155–161

“If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
Benjamin Franklin

“When a man meets catastrophe on the road, he looks in his purse, but a woman looks in her mirror.”
Margaret Turnbull

“The best way to keep loyalty in a man's heart is to keep money in his purse.”
Irish Proverb

Just a few examples.

Estarra, you are +10.

If we're going with the idea that things that were OK back then are kosher now, please pardon me a moment while I capture me some serfs.

Also, another thing to take into account is the definition of the word "purse". It used to mean wallet, which is quite manly.
Gwylifar2008-03-06 22:02:00
I changed mine to a sporran. Sporran is the highland, manly-man's name for "purse". smile.gif

visaeris has one, and keeps a metric butt ton of vials/wands/other stuff in it.. don't call him femine, trust me
Jigan2008-03-06 22:57:11
A purse made from skulls. That would be manly.

I suddenly had the mental image of a Knight in full armour with this tiny pink purse being snatched by a robber and going "Eee, someone help me!" and swatting at the robber.

No offense to the female gender. But that's just the stereotype of someone with a purse. I know better than to stay within purse range, but it's just a funny thought.

Why not just make it a wallet?

Visaeris was actually the first person I saw with a purse. I giggled when I saw him start taking stuff out of his manbag. Not to his face though, I was afraid he'd kill me.
