Another of my random ideas. Anyway, I propose that custom emotes be revamped to where they do something. Let's see...
Suppose that I wanted to sleep, but have a custom message for it (not everyone curls into a ball, after all.).
So, I'd do this.
EM falls face-first onto his plate of food, snoring through the mashed potates.
Everyone else would see:
Shurimaru falls face-first onto his plate of food, snoring through the mashed potatoes.
But the fundamental difference here is that the command in brackets would actually be executed. I think this could really improve on some RP things. It always puzzled me how someone in full-plate armor could curl into a ball. I always pictured it as more of a cube...
However, I think it'd be a good idea to only apply this to non-combat actions. The last thing we need is custom attack messages out the wazoo screwing up everyone's systems.

Character limit!
But yeah, I like the idea. I wish you could do it with flying too. Maybe you don't always flap your wings powerfully, you know? I could see a faeling fluttering theirs rapidly or something.
And I want custom poses too!

There would have to be some sort of unifying phrase so it can continued to be triggered for classes that rely on causing their opponents (see: Wiccans). Sleep does have a combative component.

But you wouldn't make yourself sleep in combat. Unless you're a dreamweaver, maybe, but even they don't go asleep in the same room as the person(s) they're fighting.
That said, even though this is a neat idea, I see a lot of potential abuses for it. Basically, what Forren said, but for other stuff.
Unknown2008-03-10 02:12:08
Heh, I've actually had this idea but have never brought it up for the fact that I could never come up with a way for it to work that would not be abused. Maybe you need full health and mana? Don't know how that would go over though.
Shurimaru2008-03-10 13:20:18
I was thinking along those lines, too, Othero. Also, give it a much longer balance recovery time than normal custom emotes, maybe? It would probably discourage most forms of abuse if it took 5-6 seconds to regain balance. And, Noola, I was considering throwing in a custom pose idea here, too, so you all can feel free to drift to that if you want. Or, supposedly, one could use this to do standard emotes and then have the pose afterward.
For example:
EM attempts to hide the faint smile that crosses his face.
It'd still do my custom emote, then hide the faintsmile emote, but still give the pose afterward. But that'd probably be a pain to code.

It'd also be a bit limiting. You'd still be stuck with the list of predefined poses really. What I'd like to see is the ability to write any pose (maybe with a character limit). So, when you walk into a room you'd see:
Randomguy is pacing back and forth, glancing at the door. Otherguy is sitting on the floor, reading a book. Onemoreguy is running a whetstone along the edge of his sword.
in lieu of
Randomguy is here. Otherguy is here. Onemoreguy is here.
or even seeing something from the limited (because you just can't come up with every possible thing a person might be doing, no matter how extensive the list is).

Aye, I see what you meant now. Custom poses + custom emotes = lolawesome
Tajalli2008-03-10 18:22:03
Custom poses also have the threat of things like, "Soandso is AFK"
Though, the addition to custom emotes would be fun. "soandso smooths out her skirt before sitting on the blanket " to have the person sit, as you can't sit on blankets, for an example. Sometimes custom emotes/interactions are with non-tangible parts of the environment, and this would allow a bit more use with that, or add some more flavour.

That would be solved with a little judicial use of the Smack Down. Peer and Admin.
Shurimaru2008-03-10 18:36:40
Instead of 'he is AFK,' they could have: "Shurimaru is here, staring blankly into space as his mind wanders." Or, "Shurimaru is here, slack-jawed and vegetative."
Gwylifar2008-03-10 18:49:56
There's already a DAYDREAM emote with a pose, and I don't think the world ended quite yet. (Sure keeps trying to, though.)

Yes! This is EXACTLY what I was going for!
Xavius2008-03-11 09:43:41
We already have highly abusable emotes. I think people realize how fast the shrubstick would come down if an abuse was logged.
That being said, I think it would be better if this were implemented more along the lines of the give emote so that it couldn't be used to obscure what you're doing.

All right, then maybe we could do this:
Shurimaru does:
EM shoves a wrapped package into your hands
And Amatsemaru sees:
Shurimaru shoves a wrapped package into your hands.
Shurimaru has given black leather boots to you.
I assume this is what you meant?
Nerra2008-03-12 23:19:23
Get a none nexus client, and do the pose while at the same time send the sleep command? Is it really that big a deal?
Shurimaru2008-03-13 19:56:19
You're missing the point, Nerra. The idea is that we replace the "Shurimaru curls into a ball and falls asleep" message with something custom (if we want to.)
