I'll have to try this speedwalking some time, but if it doesn't tell me which direction I move so I can sync it up with my own maps, I'll not be using it at all. Great advantage for all those without mappers, though, definitely.

It does not. What is the importance of having it sync with your maps (as opposed to using the in-game map, which always knows where you are, for instance)?

The large advantage a map done in something like CMUD has over the in game map is the fact that you do not have the spam/flickering issue. I can have my map open in a sub window next to my main mud window and when I move my position is instantly updated on my map. Turning mapview on (much like the aetherspace map) is just a much worse visual experience for me.
Then again as I already have a map, and a speedwalker, this feature is not targeted to me. I think a server side speed walk is a bit odd but if you do not see a performance impact then it does not hurt anything.
What this does do though, assuming I want to go through the pain of remarking my map, is allow me to update my position on my map with perfect accuracy just using the "real" room numbers.
I.E. Before when I teleported or something similar the best I could do was do a look up on the room name, and if that failed to find a unique room, fall back on exits, and if that failed I would have to look at all adjacent rooms. Basically it was a big pain and I never got it fully working. Now I can just mark each room on my map with the "real" room number and then after a teleport check the room number and update my position.
In fact now that I think about it having a preference to display the room number in the brief/verbose room description would be wonderful. Failing that a special command which would just return the current room number would be great. While checking the MAP works, it is very spammy if you do not care about the map (and a pain to gag, not even sure how I would).

I would think the reason to show the direction you move isn't to sync with a map, but more because it makes sense you'd know which way you just went. Maybe if you speedwalk a route often enough you could actually learn what the way was, at least partially, so you could go that way without speedwalking in a pinch (like if someone's blocked part of the path).

The spam of mapview is quite disgusting, too. I quite like MAP for stopping in the undervault and figuring out where the hell I am, but every time I move? No thanks! You're not getting any tells or aether conversations with that unless you read lightning-fast like me, and even then it's a pinch.
I don't this is fixable without Tully's Mysterious Map Technology that lets you suspend the map view on the client somehow.

Yup. That about sums it up.

I'll look into informing you of the direction you move with speedwalking.

Any chance on gaining access to roomnumbers beyond the MAP command as well?
