How'd you come up with your characters name?

from a book? song? movie? previous character? game? just stumble out of your mouth?

Ralanbek is from Raymond E. Feist latest series 'the darkwar saga'.
Thought he was pretty epic, and wanted to play him! though i'm still working on my RPing but hopefully i tune in on his badass-ness.

Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PS1.

My favorite character was a snotty mage woman named Celine that always ended fights with "That was it?" I loved that game. Best RPG ever. Made all the Final Fantasy's look like Donkey Kong.

For me, I just needed a character name (actually made this for a character profile far prior to playing here) and thats what I came up with.

I've seen one other person use it too though, and apparently they mixed/matched a couple of words together to get it.

I tend to like trying to use my own stuff usually.
Casilu2008-06-02 04:49:17
I took two words and mixed them together, then my brain randomly changed letters around and all together, and I got this.

It's my Priestess name, actually.

Lady Myrkr.

Myrkr means darkness.

Originally the Roman God of the Hunt.

Mentioned in the Bible a couple of times.

Once Emperor of Rome, for 28 days.

I see character plagiarism as a sign of an inferior and uncreative mind.

With that kind of attitude it must drive you crazy that you were copied by blizzard. At first glance it is what I thought of, but then I read your explanation for the time lines involved. Sucks to be you.

If the game is not serious (or it is something like a board) I use adjectives or verbs.

For serious names I check out real world name lists, pick a name that looks good, and then google it to make sure it is not some common name I just had never heard of. It works well.
Xavius2008-06-02 07:11:24
Unintentional coincidences are an entirely different boat. I really somehow doubt that Blizzard's story writers play Lusternia to get inspiration. I also really somehow doubt that, while my name hit the public eye first, that they hadn't already put pen to paper using the name Xavius before.

I'm sure you can see the difference between that and "I skated past the rules regarding making an original name by luck of the draw."

You misunderstood. I was saying that for people who play WoW your name is one of those obvious ones. Thus they will assume you are like one of the people you hate. I was saying how that assumption must be annoying for you as you seem to care so much about the source of a name.
Saaga2008-06-02 07:22:48
Saaga is quite plainly the word 'saga' in Finnish. I want to give the name to my daughter if I ever get one, though - the Swedish equivalent Saga is commonly used.
Aison2008-06-02 07:54:58
Aison is from Greek mythology. More commonly spelled Aeson. A lesser-known tale, Ae/Aison was mentioned in the Iliad.

I had no intention of making Aison my main character, and I picked the name variation because I noticed that most IRE games are based around Greek names (aether, for example, is actually a Greek name). It's also a boy's name... Aison was going to be a boy, but since this was my first character in Lusternia, I decided to play a girl (since I am a girl), just to interact with the world willy-nilly. She ended up getting a personality and being fun to play, as one of the 'ugly' women of Lusternia, so I play her. Obviously.

I didn't choose an overly elaborate name. I wanted something simple to go with a simple character.
Aerotan2008-06-02 10:08:30
To be honest I don't even remember how I got the name Aerotan. I vaguely remember it having to do with a middle school friend of mine, but God only knows what.

Syridean I pulled from a name database. It's Gaelic, I think, and means Truth. I think. It was originally a two part name, but the second part of it had me hopelessly lost before I decided to make him a character.

Torre just kinda popped into my head one day.

OMG, that game kicks major ass!

Anyway, my alt names are random, usually they have alot of Y's in them, dunno why. Shaddus was a random name, like Shade, I wanted something dark, for the ninjakari.
Alef2008-06-02 11:40:27
I just used the first name that came to mind when I was creating him. I have no idea where the inspiration came from.
Ashai2008-06-02 12:29:39
I'm not sure where Ashai came from, but apparently it's the name of some arabic politician.
Lendren2008-06-02 12:46:46
Recycled from an NPC in a roleplaying game I ran. The name was created to emphasize that the character was a 'regular guy', of entirely common origins. He actually gets called Lenny, and doesn't mind (unlike Lendren in Lusternia, who hates that like nothing else, and not in a ha-ha goofing-around way, in a deadly serious way).

I closed my eyes and hit random keys on the keyboard. It worked.
