There was times that I praised Lusternia. But ever since monks were introduced, the game has ceased to even be worth playing. It's just a mere amusement now.
Seriously? I do not even know where to start with that statement.
And I agree the issue is more with RP that allows for no interaction. I think most characters would become annoyed with someone who failed to interact with them just like most players get annoyed with it OOC.
It is similar in nature to the person who just constantly sighs and makes leading statements trying to get anyone to ask them what is wrong, but then just sighs when asked and says "oh nothing", and then they do this over and over. It gets really old. Interaction takes two. I try to do things that allow others to respond however they want rather than try and force them to interact with me on my own terms. It is not easy to define but I think it is easy to recognize the players who's RP adds to interaction and those who's RP is more selfish.

Do not think about developing a roleplay. Just do it.
As thought about ideal roleplay increases, so do the chances of the actual roleplaying being screwed up. You do not plan the entirety of your life/personality, after all; you simply live.

Best advice ever, and a good segue into why Daed thinks I listed off everyone's roleplay.
If from the outset, you decide that you're going to be an unwavering preacher of the necessity of the Light, you've decided from the outset to make a character that 1) won't be realistic, 2) won't be appealing to others, and 3) won't have any depth or room for character growth.
There aren't any real people who are unwavering preachers of anything. Rabid Christians sin. Rabid environmentalists pollute. The list goes on. Also, all rabid preachers become rabid preachers for a reason, and many stop being rabid preachers after a time. Real people, be they rabid preachers, serial killers, or shameless whores, all have moods and moments. So, if you want a well-rounded character to roleplay, think about how people develop and start a character based on a few dispositions. Xavius is disposed to hands-on action over theory and process, with the exception that he will emphasize theory to encourage other people to take action rather than sit and talk. Xavius is stubborn. Xavius takes pride in successfully doing something new. Everything else in his character comes from the life he's lived.
I assure you, maintaining roleplay with something like this is easy. You take your short list of dispositions, and every once in a while, you stop for a moment and go through the list. Can Xavius just go do something that might accomplish this? Should someone who Xavius has influence with be doing this? Does embracing the situation mean violating what he thinks is right? Is there an opportunity to do something for the first time? Ok, now type.
You'll find similar things in many other convincing characters. Shayle is tidy, social, and proper. Yeralih is decadent, protective, and maternal. Post-Song Kalodan was brash, xenophobic, and flighty.

I feel a need to respond to this really quick.
Sometimes, people do this (RL and IG) to try to force you to figure out what's wrong. I mean, I've done it in real life before. I think Myrkr's done it, not sure. But for me, when I do, it's usually because I don't know how to say it straight out, and because I want to make sure you actually care about what I have to say, opposed to me just blabbing at you (which Myrkr does) and hoping you listen and pay attention.
Of course, there's always a reason for just blabbing away as well.

This is sort of what my question is aiming to discuss. I know there are hyperactive faelings and such, but at what point does it become too much?
Druken makes some good points, and it does clarify a few things for me. Beyond emotes, what are some other things that would go too far? For example, if I wanted Rauros to be a holy zealot, preaching to every person who comes to the Pool, would that be a bit too much? (Btw, already tried this, and got some negative feedback, both IC and OOC, so I won't be doing this again)

Zealots aren't too difficult to pull off if you do it right. Creslin was quite the zealot (and racist, but everyone in Celest is racist), and Aison is one as well. It is increasingly difficult for her to stand in less-than-ideal places without having some sort of bad reaction. It is really all about who you preach to. Obviously Aison is not going to stand at the Pool and preach to the choir... but she will do it to Serens, Gloms, and occasionally Mags when they need it.
QUOTE(Celina @ Jun 3 2008, 08:37 PM) 517934
Honestly, it's the little things that make good RP. You can only take fanatical anti-taint or Crazy Geomancer so far. Your character needs quirks just like real people. For instance, with Celina I've started to use a lot of crowtongue when she talks. She uses it always, not just in greating or farewells like most BT do. She is very affectionate towards her familiar but rarely anyone else.
Just don't...roll your r's all the time or snuggle with everything that moves, or something equally annoying. You should be fine.
Just don't...roll your r's all the time or snuggle with everything that moves, or something equally annoying. You should be fine.
wth? I agree with you again. Stop that.
Personally, it's a lot about emotes, but not going over the top. Try not to think of your character as being in a text adventure... try to picture it as if you are standing there in Celest, looking at the stars and maybe picking up a conversation with Meleris. Sometimes a Divine will take over a denizen to help, but don't always count on it. And sometimes when they do, the denizen turns out to be a giggling idiot... so it's up to you to turn the conversation how you want it to go.
Here in Lusternia, we have the wonderful invention of say-emotes:
SAY (passing her hands over her face) What the Nil is he doing?
comes out:
Passing her hands over her face, Aison says, "What the Nil is he doing?"
Done appropriately and you've something going on. Also, SPEAKING TO PEOPLE. I hate it when people are randomly talking and I have no idea to who. It makes me think they are talking to air. SAY TO PERSON. You can still do the emote part, just speak to the person, please!
SAY TO DUDE (looking into the Pool of Stars, then over her shoulder) It looks like it's gotten more power since yesterday!
Looking into the Pool of Stars, then over her shoulder, Aison says to Dude, "It looks like it's gotten more power since yesterday!"
You don't always need to use the emotes, but they are useful if you want to spice up a conversation. You can give your character certain quirks. Aison chews on her lip when she is thinking. She wrings her hands and sweats when she is nervous. Her body quakes and her voice shakes when she is afraid, etc. It is pretty normal to have these reactions to situations, but not a lot of people express that. A lot of people will go head first into Muud and not think about it, or head to Astral without two thoughts. Aison has to muster up courage to do those things.
Also, Aison has a huge fear of heights and flying. She won't hesitate to fly if it will save her life, but she is not going to be clinging to the rooftops or chilling out above the Pool (drowning is also another one of her fears, though she rarely expresses it. She had a dream when she was new from the portal that she had drowned in the Inner Sea, which made her go Merian. She's since switched race from Merian, but is still scared of drowning, although she finds the water to the be soothing). She pretty much refuses to go into aetherships or go hunting aetherbeasts. They make her sick and she's afraid she'll get stuck out in the middle of nowhere.
Those are just a few examples of Aison. She has days when she is downright mean and other days when she is feeling especially happy. Maintaining a perfect character with no flaws is not only hard and near impossible, it's boring. It's exciting when your character effs something up, because then they are forced to fix it.

Honestly, I've played plenty of RP-Only Muds. I've been really successfull and had alot of fun in them. Lusternia adds real conflict which is more appealing to me, that doesn't mean I throw in my OOC thoughts into my character. I set a precedent to my characters RP which I follow all the time and it does indeed effect the outcome of what he says or does. Just becuse it happens to border on what I enjoy about the game, doesn't mean I always do what I myself want to do.
Daedalion himself has absolutly no patience at all for someone who doesn't talk and just bounces around and blinks at him. When I myself find it annoying but I could deal with it enough to find a way to communicate if it was necessary.
My character it childish, malicious and prefers action over thought. He enjoys chaos and strife as opposed to peace and tranquility. It is obviously not my personality, though I do enjoy playing it out.

Of course. Once you start liking people and getting along with them despite obvious "character flaws" and accepting them for who they are, that means that there's something wrong with you and you should be ostracized and avoided at all costs, and have your cookies stolen.

Lusternia is amusing to me solely because of the interactions I have with other people. If I were to be an utter miser IG, though, I'm sure that no one would have any fun interactions with me, and thus Lusternia would not be worth it. I do have lots of lovely interactions, though, which is why I adore Lusternia and the orgs that I'm a part of, and most of these interactions stem from amazing RPers.

My favorite part about Daedalion <3 <3
Anyways, about Fay. She showed up at the Ravenwood again and seemed to be sincerely interested in Glomdoring. If she wants to bounce and blink along with other things then that is totally her decision, and I don't have a problem with her in the least. The point was she didn't give us anything else previously. It was just bouncing. As Daed said, we don't really have the patience for people that just stare at us. Even the mute thing is fine, even though some call it cliche. It might be, but I've seen people pull it off. Carrie, she's gone now, did a wonderful job with it. People will work with you as long as you give them something to work with.

A big part of RP is evolution. There are certainly things you don't want to do because it violates your RP, but things can and will happen that will change your character's mind. A highly evangelical preacher of the Light can be let down by one of the Supernals he loves, shattering his devotion and faith and altering the RP, for instance. Of course, not all changes have to be so drastic.
Take Ev for instance. For the first 2 or so decades, he was cheerful, full of life, optimistic, loyal to the Seren, had girls hitting on him all the time, and had exceptional social skills. Now, after enduring 7 decades, he is considerably less cheerful, seems less full of life, is more pessimistic, has absolutely no romantic side of him, and is gruff in public. He regards everyone politely, but his loyalty has shifted very far inward to the Serenguard. Among them, he is like his old self, but out in the rest of the world, he is very different from the Young Wing who came from the Portal.

Depends on who he talks to.
Though, on the topic of evolution, Myrkr was actually just a very quiet, maternal person to start off with. Then she got adopted by Arukashi. And Arukashi and her aunt, Ahnn, were both very attentive to her, so, she really learned what it was to love other people. And how they'd both get upset when she was sad.
Then they committed suicide.
Left Myrkr in a constant happy-go-lucky sort of state, because they never told her why they decided to suicide. And it also left her feeling very lonely and clingy.
If anything, just choose a base personality for your character and let things happen -- you never know what might.
