Well, I try to play Ried as a mild, motherly kind of fascist, so she always means it, even if I don't.
Kante2008-06-22 17:26:29
Celina, stop dragging IC :censor: OOC. It gets old. It's a game for Christ's sake.
Malicia2008-06-22 17:29:09
Have to hand it to Visaeris for that one.
Amarysse2008-06-22 17:36:51
As a player, yes, it does get old for me. OOC, I can appreciate people wanting to say it when they log on or when there's a discussion on the commune aether, or even (gasp) a major event that involves the commune... But when it's done three times in less than a minute, despite the fact that my character will respond faithfully, I start to get annoyed. It becomes less a meaningful expression of unity, and more of a way to tell who's not AFK, or to snicker at who's got it triggered.
As far as Amarysse is concerned, people should mean it if they say it. To her, it's meant to be a unifying call, a rallying cry, a reminder of purpose, and if the people parroting it don't mean it, they shouldn't bother opening their mouths. It's not just a string of empty words, and no one's required to say it, but those who refuse to say it are just as ridiculous as those who only say it to make some noise on the commune aether. Honestly, she can't imagine anyone not being sincere when they say it, or anyone not wanting to say it at all.
But, as others have stated already, it's not a requirement. If you don't want to, you don't have to.
That being said, I'm not incredibly surprised that Visaeris is at the center of a controversy, given his reputation, but I don't think this particular situation is a massive, heart-stopping issue. No arms need to be twisted either way. I am a little surprised, though, that people were using the discussion about NMBG/GBTG on the commune aether to inject bitterness about the event.
The GBTG discussion didn't make much of an impression on me, as far as Vis's presence in Glom is concerned, but I was honestly impressed with the post he made regarding success and failure, and I look forward to seeing what else he does (or attempts, heh) in the commune.

In what way? If it was forced, sure, but it has never actually been forced or required. People do it if they want to, and don't do it if they don't want to. Whining that some people want to do it isn't exactly a brave (or novel) thing, as it has been done before.
Malicia2008-06-22 17:41:44
Just that he might have hit the nail on the head when he implied that it may have lost its meaning during years of repetitiveness with possibly little to support it.
Ashai2008-06-22 17:44:04
I think GBtG is inappropriate when used as a casual greeting. That's all. It's wonderful when we all indulge in the mobocratic unity following some sort of victory, but on a regular basis, it loses its point a bit.
Unfortunately, we're still going to have to lynch Visaeris for challenging our ways.

I'm pretty sure Visaeris' line at the end of that qualifies as a masterstroke.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that point, I'm afraid. I try not to swear in my posts, however, so I won't say what I actually think of it, heh.

Nobody was whining about anything. I was just pointing out that when all you do is mash your GBTG macro every 30 minutes, how much glory is really being brought to the forest?
They're pretty words that should remind us of who we are, but in the end when it's just an alias you pop off randomly it means nothing.
That's all I'm sayin'.

I actually have to agree with Malicia, for once.
Hazar2008-06-22 23:30:33
I agree. It's ridiculous when people pop it off as a greeting. NMBG normally means something to me when it's timed appropriately - when we shout it right after some big victory, or when we repeat it quietly after a loss.
But oh wait. I can't tell people to stop doing it casually - I'll poison the atmosphere.

Not the first time someone has complained about GBTG spam. If I recall, last time, some adminny type possessed Rowena to talk about it on ct.
Yeah, we need more talk on ct besides "Elder ravenwood here" and mass call-and-response NMBG/GBTG chains. Not sure what to suggest, though--my only other IRE was Achaea, and I really don't want Glomdoring ct to end up like Ashtan's.

Thought they possessed that illithoid that was going to teach us monk skills.

Sounds familiar as well. Maybe they were both talking.
Moralis2008-06-23 09:36:54
Yeah, well there used to be a lot more chatter on CT. I've noticed though that most people seem to take their casual interactions outside the forest however. I may have a selected view though. It seems to me like about 20ig years ago every glom and their cousin had a relationship/best friend living in a city.
As to the GBTG I've always found that for whatever char I'm using, I simply change it slightly to something my char actually means, when it gets spammed I ignore it.
As to Visaeris, dude, your post about the spirit thing bought you some serious hate-age from peeps. It was masterful!

Meh. I see no problem with it IC, but I can understand why some players may find it a little tedious or annoying. I quite like it though, it sets us apart from the other orgs. But as has been said, if you don't want to participate, don't.
Now move on and stop questioning our ways.
