Recent Bard Change (encore)

When I was told that Encore increased the speed of Bard ticks, I was a bit dumbfounded. "What's that?" I told my source. "Why would they increase the speed of bard songs? This is madness"

But then I was given the original envoy suggestion, and I think something got lost in translation

QUOTE
- New PERFORM ENCORE ability in Music specs to immediately bring a song
to the 9th stanza.

This option was declined for balance reasons(not sure what's balancing about having to spool through your song, but ok). Instead, they were told, they'd add a new feat to make bards able to play songs faster for a limited period. Of course, that makes sense, it's reasonable. Use the feat, it cuts perform time in half.

Except... That's not what it does. It instead doubletimes songs, and puts them at a 5 second tick. I sincerely hope that this was miscommunication between the design and coding teams, and not intentional.

Bards should get a feat to quickly be able to perform their songs up. Bards should not get a feat to speed up the impact of their songs.

If Estwald were to encore you're looking at about 15 seconds to starvation/passing out. If Xiel were to encore that's 2k passive damage every 5 seconds..

Fix it please.

He was full when we started, he was weak from hunger when we finished, but he was using orange. So yeah this is a bit much. I can only imagine songs with passive damage.
Aison2008-07-04 16:59:13
With the way bards are, making encore immediately jump a bard to the 9th stanza is far more useful than making it faster for a shorter period of time. Makes it better for combat (such as during defense, you wouldn't have to sit there fumbling with your song while everyone waits on you, deffing up takes less time after death, and if it fades it isn't such a travesty), hunting, and general convenience.

Doesn't seem like communication was very key in this operation. I agree with Visaeris, something must have gone wrong.

This is completely wrong. You lose about 18 seconds a death to fire back up your songs, give or take.

Whereas you can go from doing 2k damage every 10 seconds to 2k damage every 5 seconds, which is a jump to 400dps instead of 200dps.

Ryleth2008-07-04 17:05:26
Unfortunatly I agree that encore is overpowered, almost extremely so for some bard specs. I'm slighty annoyed that we may have just lost an envoy slot on it though, the proposed encore idea was rather nice. Hate losing my song mid-fight..just horrible
Ardmore2008-07-04 17:10:08
I don't want it to speed up bard songs OR bard tics. I argued it on the envoy channel but I had to take off for a few hours (class is about to start).

If you speed up the time it takes to play a stanza, that makes it so
-you can play threnody before blackout ends from queenslament (or any bard 3p / and bard instakill)
-Wildarrane can attack you with their spirits twice as fast
There are obviously more.

If you speed up the time it takes a song to tick.
-Hunger is more of an issue
-Passive damage is MUCH more of an issue

The one to instantly go to the 9th stanza isn't bad. The other two are overpowered. If a BARD is complaining about this it's a problem.

Sometimes I wonder where common sense goes through this process... "Ok bards want this... but let's just speed up their songs!" "Umm.. wouldn't that be.." *puff! logic has exited the area!* "omg that's genius! Bards obviously need to have their attacks faster! it increases the fun and value of combat!"

... says a MONK.

I'd rather have be able to start the song at the 9th stanza, then having double speed songs.
Ardmore2008-07-04 17:32:42
I think any bard who doesn't fail at keeping their songs playing (except when fighting another bard, it's just impossible) would rather have the double tick because we know how extremely overpowered this will be.
Unknown2008-07-04 17:50:22
I haven't actually played for a while but when I read this update it did strike me as peculiar too. Still hoping that there may be something to make continuous refraining/ending songs easier to manage in the meantime whistling.gif
Ardmore2008-07-04 18:05:18
I've yet to have a problem with refraining and ending... Explain a bit better? I don't get what you mean.
Celina2008-07-04 19:49:31
Yeah, just like I thought. This is an epic bad idea.

2k passive damage every 5 seconds. Geomancer demesne on crack. I hope this is gone by the time wildnodes rolls around this weekend.

And I hope the Admin who thought this up isn't drunk. Still.

When I was a bard I often forgot to refrain my song, even with a counter and a very large, flashy echo. It was a royal pain in my ass to have to start from stanza 1 and go to 9 all over again (especially frustrating in combat). Refraining in the middle of a raid was a pain, too, as it often meant that you were the sole reason the group got held up.

Subj: New Bard Skill: Encore

The new encore skill for bards was not implemented as designed because
of bad communication on my part for which I apologize. What encore
should do is to give bards a brief period where their playing is
quickened (i.e., faster equilibrium recovery). This has been fixed.

There was no miscommunication. We rejected the idea of moving a song from stanza 1 to 9 as untenable. We felt this was a better solution, allowing you to rise up in stanzas at a faster rate. Faster performing is also more flexible strategically and tactically.

With this new ability, then, will it be possible for a bard to minorsecond with this 'quickening', thus allowing them to accumulate about, let's say, ~6k worth of damage?
Celina2008-07-04 20:35:29
So it no longer makes songs tic twice as fast, just makes stanza recovery time quicker?

It's not quickening.

Correct. Which is what it was supposed to do.. Just a bit of a miscommunication between design and code.
