For any Envoy who has a slot open

I'm not sure if this will get looked at during any point in the future but I figured I would give it a shot. If any envoy has a slow open (hahahaha I know) and wouldn't mind throwing a bone to some of the less fortunate of the player base. This is my suggestion.

Skill: Bookbinding
Ability: MagicTome (Transcendent skill)

Currently this ability requires one to wield the Magical Tome for them to receive the effects of said tome. This is a problem because it prevents 8 guilds of Lusternia from receiving proper use of the item.

Proposal: I would like to propose that this item be changed such that: It doesn't need to be held for the benefits to be gained (absorb damage, charge tome, and so forth) this way we can see all guilds be included in using the skill equally as it has no limitations on guild (such as forging) but it does artificially limit who can get proper and intended use from it (needing to hold the tome).

What do you think?
Lorick2008-07-14 11:47:47
I wouldn't have a problem with this change, but the skill is rare enough I haven't encountered it yet. Not sure how much of an impact it would have.
Simimi2008-07-14 11:54:25
Well it gives slight damage absorption for different types and can be read as one of each of the 4 types of magic scroll. I do not have Bookbinding at the moment and I do not recall what the AB file said exactly.
Emar2008-07-14 12:01:54
This would be a good change. As has been said, at the moment it's pretty much worthless to a large number of guilds. Though you can still read it while it's unwielded, you don't make it just to have a glorified four-scrolls-in-one tool, you make it for the added protection.

I can imagine a bunch of people saying "I don't think this is needed" (because there always are) but can't think of a compelling reason -not- to do this, looks all-upside to me.
Xenthos2008-07-14 17:53:43
"This isn't needed." (Just for you, Shiri!)

Though if it's an issue to fix it, mechanics-wise, why not swap it from wielded to worn? Make a new jeweller's chain or something (a few small comms, 5 silver perhaps) that can be ATTACHed to the book, and then you can wear it around your neck. Kind of like a RL camera, but in book-form. This may or may not be more work depending on how the thing's coded, but eh, I guess it's an option. Either way, not being able to use a trans tradeskill object in a few guilds is kind of meh.

what would the affects of a mage who had that and a shield aswell be though?

Your reason for its bad is below.

Really it just means every single guild would get more damage reduction available for free without needing to wield it. Then again I could use more tankyness I suppose tongue.gif

It has its ups and downs. Question is does not having to wield it really make it ok when you take into account the fact you would also have 9K health warriors taking less damage than even now? tongue.gif
Shiri2008-07-15 05:41:36
Mages/guardians/etc. can already wield one.

And what are you talking about "for free", you mean for 300 credits. And it decays. doh.gif If it gives too much DR, no one should be using it (i.e it should be nerfed). If it gives an acceptable amount or even not enough, everyone should be able to use it. Splendours are better for tankiness.

They would 9K health warriors with 90/90 armour with no proofs. Not -that- tanky.

Wield symbol
Wield shield OR tome

Damage reduc or wound reduc?

Unless you shield rune the symbol for 350 credits in the first place.. oh wait that costs more than transing bookbinding.

Honestly even the fact it self charges seems like something amazingly handy in and of itself, the reduction is just icing.

Anyone have a % on it? 15%? Oh and its not quite 300 credits its 286 which is less than the credits to shield rune! The only people who cant do this is... warriors? Anyone else always need to have two things wielded?

Then again not like warriors really hurt much anymore anyway right? tongue.gif

Monks. Don't forget us, we're squishy.
Shiri2008-07-15 05:52:08
It doesn't self-charge unless you're wielding it. And you don't symbol damage in pvp and you don't take wounds in pve, so your dichotomy there isn't much help.

Symbol allows SYMBOL EVOKE as well as symbol strike. It has a useful combat use!

Yeah, I know, but Malarious was talking about "damage reduc". And now that I think of it, you only need shields against monks/warriors, and the tome doesn't help against them.

What about certain elemental runes?

Not that it'll really come up often enough to actually be a huge issue.

The symbol also provides small amounts (5-10 DMP) of physical resistance.

If I remember right the damage reduction was really minimal. 5% or so, but that may be before DMP changes. With them it's very unlikely to have become more though. And as stated below, it's -very- possible (and for higher up people even common) for a mage to have that + shield + staff. Or a wiccan.

Either way, I really support this though, not because of the damage reduction and as such my suggestion is:

Wielded: Tome can be used as scroll + recharges + absorbs dmg (no change)

In inventory: Tome can be used as scroll + recharges on hit (does -not- give damage absorb)

In other words, make the tome recharge on it even when not wielded, but have it give the damage absorb effect only when wielded.

PS: Malarious, it isn't a decision between shield or tome ( or shield rune or bookbinding). Quite simply it's a symbol + shield rune + tome thing.
Simimi2008-07-16 02:09:28
But then it is once again rendered useless as an trans item. who wants to spend so many credits for a healing scroll they can read a lot when they could just get their own healing scroll. Isn't there an artie to make it have more charges or perm or something, the healing scroll?

The idea here was not to discriminate because 8 guilds need both hands...

At that point to make sure you have a shield you paid 350, which is higher than the tomes cost to get in the first place, you could get a whole other arty with those. So whats better? Shielding rune and a tome or splendours and with creds to spare?

I do like your holding vs wielding idea though. Shield is for warriors, monks, and anyone you need to shieldstun. Go go shieldstun tongue.gif

P.S. Tomes should be shield runable >:)
