The katanas I can understand, although they are vividly asian in origin and any player must at some point stopped and had a 'hmm' moment.
The bonjour definitely just gets to me.
The 'ninja' in Ninjakari sticks out like a sore thumb to me as well, and just screams NIHONJIN.

I remember voting for what Celest's monk guild would be named. I hated Tahtetso, it sounds like a disease. I figured they would have done the same thing in Mag. but 'NINJA'kari? I always thought that was stretching it thin. They're a popular guild because of that name.
Shiri2008-07-17 03:51:57
Huh? Tahtetso is a perfectly good name...they got the best out of the four guilds actually.
Aison2008-07-17 03:53:28
I like Nekotai the best, to be honest. Tahtetso is growing on me I suppose, but I just don't dig it. It's only an opinion. losewings.gif

Nekotai == Pink Kitty Claws adorned with bells and ribbons.

Yay!

Nekotai is the worst for me, I can't get the "nyan *paw motion*" image out of my head.

Her name is Yoshimi. She's ranked Master in the Kata...

As a side note, asking Morgfyre if Yoshimi will save us from the giant constructs just gets you a vague 'Possibly'

well, the way I think of it in my mind is that we're speaking different languages anyway, common isn't english. its all a translation
Unknown2008-07-17 06:20:19
Yeah, I think you have to do your best to not think of common as english. It is a different language that everyone in Lusternia speaks. Best example I have is Nihilist. In english Nihilist is someone who believes in Nil or nothing (Yeah I know that I have really paraphrased this and distorted it.) In common a Nihilist is someone who worships Nil, a cosmic plane. Same words, very different meanings as they are two different languages. So in this regard a word like Katana is not japanese, it is a common word.

Tahtetso is alright in my opinion, I can see why Ninjakari would be popular because of it though.

I've thought of this as well.
Technically, the word cosmic in common means the same thing in english; as does basically every word aside from the 'concocted' words. Just about every language, fantasy or not has an equivelant or rough translation for the next.

FYI: Nil is actually a Latin word, which means nothing.

I hope nobody thinks I'm critisizing Lusternia's creative process, I don't have a problem with these references but would like to clear up some confusion.
Shiri2008-07-17 09:06:11
Cosmic doesn't mean at all the same thing in common and English. If anything, an aethership's pilot is a "cosmonaut" in English. EDIT: Or...Russian loanwords?
And yes, Nil means nothing, but Nil isn't nothing. They are the same sounds but different words, maybe a little like "idealism" (there is no material world, everything is mental substance.)

It's a bit like how a rockeater is an ordinary animal. Hm.

Cosmonaut is compoundy, and algontherine is..yeah.

Same situation with Faerietale and Fairytale.

Or heres a thought maybe they wanted a cool word to define their super evil guild?

Why not aethernaut? "Aether" was an anglicized word (in common use in 18th and 19th century science), so "aethernaut" is as valid an English/Common formation as astronaut or cosmonaut are. And in Lusternia there's a clear distinction between "cosmos" (or at least "cosmic") and "aether".

I know there's a difference in Lusternia, that's what I'm saying. Fair enough about the old English aether though.

Yeah, personally I do feel as though the Tahtetso got the best names, followed by Shofangi. Kitties and ninjas.. Gah, sorry, I just don't consider the names that serious.

We tried to change the name several times before the guild was opened. But the admins were adamant that it HAD to have ninja in it. I'm serious.

I would have too in their shoes. It's a business, and marketing is part of it. For better or worse, there's a customer base for "ninja". At least Lusternia is removed enough from the real world as a setting that it's not so out of place. I mean, how many MUDs and settings are basically Western European based with a bunch of B grade martial arts movie extras forced down their throat by the legion of kung-fu kiddies?

The correct answer is "far too many".

Let’s leave alone the fact that in these poor beaten up settings, the genre stomping freaks usually come from "a land far to the east", and have most of the stereotypical trappings associated thereof.

Lusternia does a better job of dealing with this, without excluding the potential playerbase that gets drawn in by such things. Monks come from Kephera and Illithoids. Things like katana may come from the Dracnari, but their culture isn't by any means a mirror image of the "far east" package.
My real pet peeve on the topic is when people create a “famous Delportian ” to quote or reference in conversation who clearly mirrors a real life person (from France, or otherwise). Self-edit- the rest of this was needlessly mean to people who this, because I'm cranky today. Roar.
Prisch2008-07-17 18:06:07
I don't have any problems with ninjakari IG.
But if you tried using the word ninja?

You'd probably get in major trouble for it.
Maybe.
