If this is true, I hope the upcoming changes will make it more useful for monks to use the skills with weapons and more variable methods, rather than just PPK for everyone, which is perhaps a bit too easy and lame to set and to use.

There was a myth to that effect for a while, but it was disproven a long long time ago.
