Myrkr. If you feel like asking questions, ask them away. Even if you think it might be stupid, do it. Other students don't matter and those who do not care about the class will not listen either way if you ask a question or not. People who are interested in the class do appreciate your questions.
Also, it all depends on the class. If it's a big lecture, 50 students or something like that, KISS (keep it simple short). If it's a more smaller class, discussion is more than likely encouraged by the teacher.
Do participate if you want to. Do not hide under the radar if you do not want to.
Remember this is not High School. It's good to be smart and all those jerks on the first day will last at most a whole year.
As for friends, the university should have an event on the opening week about the student organizations. I would recommend to join two, one serious organization and one for fun. The serious could be anything from Toastmasters club to Computer Science or Criminal Justice clubs or similar things to your major. The reason why is because you want to be associated by them and in the future it might lead to the descoveries of lectures, conferences, job opportunities, research, internships and other stuff that might be useful academically and on your career.
The second organization should be for fun. Anime/Manga clubs, film clubs, reading clubs, RPG clubs, general gaming clubs... clubs that interest you, so you'll find more people like you and people you might want to run too if things get lonely. I would say keep the sororities at a distance if only because of the crowd that goes around there, unless that is you want to enter a popularity contest or your girlfriends are there in the first place, which would surprise me since you play a MUD and I would consider you quite geeky/nerdy.
Study and have fun. Manage time or you'll end up like me

I passed the FBI background check fine. Also, what is dangerous that I could do with an advanced knowledge of nuclear physics?
GEE I HAVE NO IDEA. Probably nothing that I couldn't also do.

If you are at Stanford, do everything you can to catch a talk with Dr. Ronald Davis. The research he is doing on genetic markers in human trauma patients is very interesting. He'll blow your mind.
And people wonder why I'm crazy.... hasn't it occured to anyone that my mind might have been blown? Dr. Davis -is- effing amazing. So is Prof. James Nelson, he teaches cellular dynamics and is a fantastic storyteller. The only downside is that I would always get "stuck" speaking in a british accent after class... And I think everyone should look up Richard Zaire's papers analyzing beer bubbles.

School starts tomorrow (about eleven hours from now) for me.
I'm nervous. I'm very, very nervous.
What if I accidentally piss off my teacher? Or what if my teacher just doesn't like me? What if my peers don't like me? What if I get sick during class? What if I say something really stupid and look like an ass? What if I talk too much? What if I talk too little?

I started classes today too, I'm a junior though. You don't happen to go to UK do you?
But yeah, basically what everyone else said, college isn't too big of a deal. The only thing you should ever stress about are your assignments, not the meaningless stuff you're worrying about now. You can be as visible or as invisible as you like in college, but I'm sure you'll learn that soon enough. I usually don't talk much in my classes, the one exception being English, which I enjoyed and was a conversation driven class.

Delayed, but, it's a rave!
My ETH125 class has an AWESOME teacher. Saweeeet. He's a lawyer that works for the Board of Elections. In other words, he's in charge of bringing politicians who are being screwy financially to either pay or go down. Also, my ETH125 class has a signer for one of the deaf students. According to the signer, if you write good notes (yay!) and write legibly ( ) then you can get PAID by the Disability's Office at John Jay for copying your notes for other students who can't take notes. Something like $15 per day per course. So, 27 days, that's $405 dollars. That'd be some nice money.
My Precalculus class. Holy. ing. . My teacher walks in, happy, in a good mood, and says, "Who here's smart?" I was hesitant to raise my hand, but I had a feeling if I didn't something bad would happen. Out of the 30 kids in my class, me and about 12 others raised our hands. She said, "Good, now, everyone who's not raising your hand? Get out of my class until you're smart." They looked around, and she insisted, "No, really, I'm not kidding, get out of my classroom." And all of them left. Once they were gone, we started out right away with Math work. I felt stupid, because she actually wanted us to participate, and I was participating, and everyone else was being quiet. I also felt like a dork because she was having us do the distance formula (eeeeeeasy) and I had the answers usually as soon as she wrote the coordinates on the board, and when she asked me how I was doing it and I said in my head, my classmates gave me a look like I had four heads. But my teacher talked to me after class and asked me why I wasn't in a junior-year class and if I was just trying to get an easy pass. Then I said I was a freshman, showed her my schedule, and she just... stared at me, pat my shoulder, said she hoped I would help tutor my fellow students, and said she hoped to see me next Wednesday.
Also, I think I'm a dork 'cause I'm actually SAD I don't have college on Monday. What the nay is wrong with me?

At our school someone volunteers for the course to take notes and at the end they get a diploma, no money though. Too bad I don't tend take notes on schedules and I write -really fast- and -really squiggly-
And as for your first day of class... keep it up being smart and trying to answer the questions the teacher gives is good and people will start asking you stuff and you should help them!
And your teacher is awesome!

My dream is to go to Oxford for medicine one day
In the mean time I'm studying Global Health (it's exactly what it sounds like) + a Psych minor. There's a course called Medical Anthropology & Social Justice that's new and being taught by a supposedly amazing prof... I'm 45 out of 50-something on the waitlist

Ooh, I just spent a week at Nottingham Uni, lovely campus.
I can say with authority that the beer in Cripps Hall is better than Lenton & Wortley Hall.

Of all the horrendous things that can happen to you in life, college is the least of many evils.
Then again I never did care much what my peers thought about me, so.

Day two, met two more of my professors.
Eng 101 -- My teacher is a little bit of an airhead. But she's not mean. She's old and a little on the deaf-side, but patient, and likes to see us talk. She scolded me for raising my hand, and said that college means I'm an adult and need to just talk when I feel it's right, not wait to be called on. But she didn't say it cruelly, but rather, laughingly. I think I made a pal in my class, not sure, but, I'm really looking forward to actually enjoying an English class for a change!
Piano 120 -- Made friends with a girl named Nini. My professor is maaaaaaajor fun. 12 kids in my class, smallest I've ever had. She made us sing the notes we played, and march around the classroom. She's very understanding, extremely patient, and willing to spend time with each of us to help us. Except for this one girl who's like 24 and took piano because she "thought it'd be an easy A". (She couldn't find the C key even after the teacher pointed it out to her 10 times)
I hope my last class, ANT 101, tomorrow is great!
So far, the worst thing about college is that it's a 3 hour commute and that I have to wait for class to start.

Here at UNO, they litter campus with signs that are quick to become targets of vandalism and take petty stabs at the significantly larger College Democrats club, usually when they can talk a senator to come to Omaha to give a speech. Mostly, people join so they can get laughed at and pretend they're martyrs for the cause.
