Up until last year, if somebody had stolen my stereo, the joke would have been on them, because it didn't work anyway. Now i take my stereo out when i'm in the city. Also, somebody located my book and is meeting me later to return it
Yay!

Also, in Finland, if your parents earn too much (which my mother does alone) you do not get support until you are twenty. And, well, parents do not have to support their child after 18 years of age. Last year when I was still seventeen, after my share of the rent and a buss card I had around 60-100 euro for the whole month. Parental support: dad: ali...aliment? Alimony? What's it called? Maintenance allowance? 128 euro/month, mother: 50 euro/month.
Luckily I turned 18, now I can at least apply for social support. And I don't even get a loan since less than 60 percent of my studies are actual classes. Well, it has been a month now, still no support.
And I just spent 75 euro for three books. Yay!

It wasn't stolen. I figured it had been, because that generally seems to be the trend, but the person who found it sent an email to my Statistics professor stating he had found the book and asked if any of his students had lost a book. I had mentioned to my professor earlier that I had lost it, so he gave me the contact info this morning in class, and I met up with the guy and he returned my book. Now, had he taken the book and tried to sell it back to the bookstore(fairly common) without the receipt, they would have held him and called me, since I had asked them to keep an eye out for it.

I get around the cost by just not buying a lot of the books for my classes if I can help it. I didn't buy any textbooks (not lab books) for the Chemistry or Biology series and got by fine.

Heheh, that's what I do too. Didn't buy my CS book last year, and never needed it.
I think I'm actually going to have to bite the bullet this semester though. My Electrical Engineering and Discreet Math profs have both said we -have- to have the book.
Each one is like $170 too.

I took an intro to philosophy class and on the first day, the teacher said, "If you haven't bought your book yet, don't. We're not going to use it, I just had to list one. If you did, and you still have your receipt, take it back. If you don't have your receipt, well, it'll look nice on your coffee table." Happily, I hadn't bought the book yet.

I was lucky, my parents paid for everything in college. But college is a terrible rip-off. I learned far far far far more in 6 months of work then I did in my 3.5 years of college. Anyone can get into college these days, which means its pretty much mandatory that you attend, otherwise any ol' idiot who figured out how to enroll in college and write the checks every semester would be more qualified for any decent job then you, even if you're far smarter then said idiot. So you're basically forced to pay a crap load of money for a sub-par education that you won't ever actually need in the real world. You just need that stupid paper they hand you at the end (or in my case, mailed to me, like I'd actually show up for my graduation, heh)
Edit: I also enjoy how a thread called "Thieves" has become a thread about college
