The mayor role is usually used to stop yourself from getting lynched. So it semi helps the town in that it's usually a town power, so it means that the person pardoning himself is more likely to be town.

Psssh, that was standard going-for-the-lurkers. I caught 2/3 scum myself!

Even if I did go for you, it wouldn't have succeeded. I was much more willing to kill a mostly-confirmed townie/roleblocker than take a risk and kill the investigator who was most likely being defended anyway.
