I have shut down the Jewel Paradise for good. After the loss of investment of over 500,000 gold in getting manse links to all four orgs and then over the last two years losing them one by one without compensation, even for some, not even a semi-polite message to inform what was going on, I have decided to close the Jewel Paradise for good.
Neuf was the first trader only rogue with no ties to any organisation in terms of skills or nexus. The Jewel Paradise was set up to be a manse accessible to all, by all and from all city/commune locations. Bit by bit I've seen this character concept of mine eroded away by player and game politics. So, I've become pretty much deluded with this character of mine which has had the most credit purchase investments.
I write here mainly because I am still receiving messages from people. Some noticed the manse was no longer accessible, others wanting some jewellery. For now, I am no longer playing Neuf, the wandering trader. If I return as Neuf, it will be with a different concept.

Ahh, good luck. I poked in a few times when Jewel Paradise was new. It was nice.

What a terrible pity. The odds are stacked against rogues enough as it is, without people getting all political on them. I should have like to visit your Paradise.

It really isn't a big deal not being connected to any orgs. All anyone has to do is PORTAL ENTER , PORTAL EXIT AETHERPLEX, PORTAL ENTER JEWELPARADISE
It isn't that much of a hinderance for people wanting to buy your jewelry. The main thing is that they -are- able to buy from your shop due to political rules so you are still able to call upon the entire basin as a customer base.
As a rogue your shop is still unique and useful because it isn't affected by -any- trade ban. The fact that it isn't connected to cities means nothing. It is still very easy to get to.
If people need it I am sure they will take those few extra steps.
Don't give up.

Umm, "political" is how and why the odds are stacked against rogues in the first place.

And, admittedly, is often what makes them fun.

I'm still not sure why manses are considered a security risk. Put guards in your portal room, save yourself the headache of checking manse privs. If Serenwilde can deal with a gazillion entrances, so can everyone else.

Actually.. having had to place guards in Celest before it's not that easy. Guards are more of a hindrance than anything. They die like flies. If you really wanted to protect a single room from a Magnagoran raid you'd have to place 50+ guards in that one room alone. Needless to say that's not feasible. As long as guards are as useless as they are things like these will likely continue.
What I also do not understand is why people enemied to an org can even exit a manse into it. I mean, you cannot dock at an org if your ship is not linked to it, it's automatically prevented. So why the hell can't it just prevent enemies from entering through a manse? There's no real RP or game reason why it should be possible for an enemy to enter through them either.

Thats a great solution, I can't think of any downsides. Admins, go for it.
Sylphas2008-09-04 03:48:25
Well, the same argument applies to the gates to the cities as well, though I guess those can have statues too (the portal room is inside, right?).
Either way, the "no exiting if you're an enemy" idea is wonderful and makes tons of sense.

What did I do?
Neuf2008-09-04 08:12:42
That idea would certainly be lovely. I doubt it would make me feel like starting all over though any time soon. I cannot stomach trying to get together close to another million gold just to get all the links again.
Hazar2008-09-04 22:38:38
Didn't everyone just explain why you don't need the links?

And he was told RL years ago, too.
Diamondais2008-09-04 22:43:32
They've already explained why you don't need the links, I'm going to make a mention of why you do not want them.
If you get links, most (if not all) of the links are going to require you to block enemies to the org. That means you're more or less blocking out most of your clients.
So just don't bother with getting linked up. None of it makes a difference.

An alias can cure that.

You can't place statues in portal rooms, and guards are useless without a statue (and even then, useless with).
Also, manses are not like city gates. They are of magical properties.
As for your manse getting disconnected: In the case of New Celest, it is too risky to let Mags portal in, ghost, and go kill people who are in the tabernacles because they have a bunch of skills which bypass guards. Not to mention Thoros can already tank 30 guards on his own. It's just too risky.

If this was implemented I may consider getting unenemied and linking up my manse to all places again. There'd be no reason to have the links woefully destroyed (over 200k in link costs, shattered because of paranoid leaders )
