Sort of the cool thing about vampires, they don't have any basics, other than that they drink blood.
I like Twilight's vampires best.

Dude, seriously? Twilight's vampires are almost like comic super-heroes. Or super-villains. She bastardized the idea pretty hard.
Being creatures of the night harmed by sun used to be quite as essential as drinking blood.
Also, there have been cases of vampires presented as creatures eating people instead of drinking their blood.
It's just the nowadays trend to put vampires everywhere, twisting them any way they see fit.
For the record, I'm fond of VtM mythos. Or Anne Rice's, that one's good too.

I...don't see why that's a bad thing?
And for the record, Dracula, the most famous vampire of all time, was not harmed by sunlight.

Fine fine, it's just a matter of preference. I honestly wasn't trying to be condescending.
After the second episode I think I like the show more, though I can't shake the feeling it's just so similar to Twilight (well, obviously it's much more explicit).

Yeah, I've never heard of it either. Is it another vampire tv show or something?

I really, really liked vampires as explained in Rice's Queen of the Damned. Not sure if she did the same in her other books, but the slow progress/evolution of individual vampires was really cool.
Also, another book I read a long time ago, title and author lost to memory, had a wholly different take on them. My favorite, in fact. They started as standard fangs+blood+sunallergy+holysymbolsarebad, then it's slowly revealed, mainly by one experimental vampire, that none of that is true. Although it wasn't given a background in that first book, turned out vampires are really strange and powerful creatures capable of controlling their physical matter completely. It was a campaign by the Christians in early times that literally convinced most vampires that exposure to sunlight would kill, holy symbols killed, they needed blood for sustenance, they could transform into wolves or mist....and so that's what they could do. It was power of belief. The experimental vampire found he could stand in sunlight without any harm at all...and taught others to do so(though a few got too scared at one point and FLAMEON! ).
At one point this big, buff vampire guy(Who didn't really believe in all these new revelations yet) got his head chopped off, so he turned into flames, killing all the baddies, and reformed with his head attached. I did like Link in Matrix 3, and woo'd out loud.

After reading the wiki on Twilight, it doesn't look like there is much comparison between the two sories other than non vampire falls in love with vampire. (which I think happens in all vampire stories in one way or another)
The sookie stackhouse/southern vampire/true blood series, really plays off of Anne rice more than anything else.

I liked the whole, Cain was marked as a vampire in VtM. Also really liked the idea of the competing houses.
Unknown2008-09-16 22:09:57
There's also the telepathy thing, Sookie being not normal.
Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga is the 4 book teenage romance with vampires/werewolves (targeted mostly at teenage girls).
I think it's supposed to be a horror too, but it isn't. Except for like a 1/3 of the last book, there's actually some creepy stuff in there.

Oh, the wiki didn't mention anything about her being a telepath... wierd.
Sookie is basically a reluctant telepathic detective in a world where vampires exist openly.

I liked the generations thing.
And how it's closely tied with the real world, throughout the history.
There's much cool stuff in VtM, like the story of the Tremere house of mages going vampires.
I don't really care about the gameplay, but it's really good and rich mythos.

Edward is the telepath. Bella is strangely immune. It's just all too familiar.

I wasn't really impressed by Twilight's vampires, except for the part that they sometimes gain a special ability through having their natural attributes amplified.
Such as Edward was very empathetic when he was human and became a telepath when he became a vampire.
What's VtM?

She is a waitress/barmaid, in the books and tv show.
But most of what we "see" is her acting as a detective in some form or another.

re anne rice.
I just sort of feel like, that the southern vampire sereis, is a sort of "post anne rice world" from the point of view of a small town girl. (rather than from the point of view of the vampires) But what the vampires are capable of, and how thier rules work etc, reminds me a bit of anne rice.
I know of VtM mostly from offshoot games, like the computer games, and the carrd trading game, and there was even a mud I once played, loosley based on it.... so what did you mean by the game play not being that good?
Unknown2008-09-16 22:46:24
I liked the WoD gameplay system, I think it was working out really well (at least the old WoD, I don't even wanna know what they did to it with the brand new dumbed down edition).
It just wasn't my main interest cause I never really planned on playing. Was just reading all the stuff for the stories.

Are you sure that Sam is the dog? Cause in tonight's episode he and the dog were playing fetch. He did refer to the dog as 'brother' though.
Daganev2008-09-22 19:46:20
Don't know anymore. Every episode the show strays further and further away from the books. Jason is doing stuff in the show, that he would never do or say in the books. Its very strange.

Sam did also bark in his sleep , but when my wife and I saw the other dog, we looked at eachother and said "where did THAT dog come from!"
