If "flavor" is stronger than combat utility, it ceases to be flavor. You are still capable of using it as flavor. Make dreams with it!
Krackenor2008-09-16 04:37:27
The problem with that is that the mote is an aggressive action. So either I need to violently punch a hole into someone's aura before flicking the mote or find someone who is asleep. People don't sleep very long or very often, making this rather moot. An illusion is non-aggressive and can be done completely in dream form.
And besides...would you really be THAT worried about a skill that would undoubtedly be rather high in dreamweaving, a skillset that almost nobody takes because of a lack of useful combat abilities?
I'm open to suggestions about modifying this idea.

You need a druid.
EDIT: And a targetted illusion would be aggressive by definition.

There certainly is a serious combat application here. I'm concerned about more illusions skills. This is something that should be vetted through envoys.

Please understand I don't really fight, so how to use things for fighting doesn't always occur to me, but if a person is asleep, how could sending them an illusion 'dream' be combaty?
Am I just completely misunderstanding someone or something?

I proposed that this could be done against awake people as well with an added power cost.

Oooh! I missed that, I guess. Well, if you got rid of that part then, there'd be no combat application, would there?
Krackenor2008-09-16 19:16:25
There wouldn't no, but it also loses most of its applicability.
People rarely sleep, and then they do so for a relatively short time. Unless, of course, the dreamweaver puts them to sleep in which case they likely have other motives than 'Oh hi! Here's a cool dream for you!'. Add that to the fact that dreamform is slow and the chances that a sleeping body will be near you are slim, then it is an ability that will rarely, if ever, get used. Admittedly, I have not tested dreamdrift as of yet.

Well, a slim chance to do something cool is better than no chance cause they won't let something combaty through.

Dreamweavers weave dreams.
By most accounts, real dreams are experienced while asleep.
You can flick this mote at people who are asleep without having to puncture their aura, and without them seeing a message that you're the one sending the illusion. You can, essentially, make them experience dreams.
I don't see the problem here, you can already do it. Dreamweavers command the dream realm, they don't bend light and weave glamours like true illusionists do.

I agree with Noola, though. It'd be better for this idea to be implemented and rarely used, than not implemented at all; it IS a good idea.

That's true, and I'm not denying that. However, we have precedence with the normal dreamweaving illusion that dreamweavers weave the dream and then manifest it in the material realm, they don't bend light. This would just be weaving the dream and pushing it into somebody's head. A daydream, if you will.

How would I go about doing that? Just talk to the Geomancer envoy?

If you agree with Noola, then you agree with the status quo. Dreamweavers can make targetted illusions, they can use them in a combat situation, and they can make undetectable targetted illusions on a sleeping character. What he's asking for is a more powerful targetted illusion.

Well daydreaming is already an ability
As for imposing the dream on reality, meh... that's not what you are asking for. You are asking for an ability that already exists within the skill without the restrictions it already has imposed on it.
If you want this for purely rp purposes then puncture beforehand and just pretend, though there is only one rp thing I've ever thought of that would require targetted illusions (nice little messages for a standard rite the aspect of the white hart you had picked would appear in a tailored vision)
Though really many things can be done with illusions, if you are going to suspend disbelief that it's not an illusion then you can suspend disbelief that you are not punctured

I wasn't talking about the affliction, but nevermind that.
To be honest, I don't really understand the stringent rejection of this idea based on combat application. It's not as though dreamweaving is an overpowered skillset, some even say (vehemently) that it's underpowered.
I'm not saying that the criticism is wrong, I just don't understand it.

Because you are asking for something the same or very similar to a skill you already have, but without the current restrictions...its like me saying i should be allowed to heretic a magnagoran without declaring because they are a heretic and thus for rp flavor i shouldnt be restricted in doing it...Well my example is a bit more extreme but still the same kind of thing...

From what I guess
Let's say you want to mess with someones system.
Best way is with an illusion, you simply make it match certain lines exactly (example your system thinks you need to writhe when you don't need to, so it writhes and throws you off-balance)
Now at the moment you can either illusion which affects everyone in the room (allies and enemies) or with a mote, do so once every 10s.
If you give this ability to dreamweavers, they would be able to make you think you have a different affliction every... 2? seconds perhaps.
Choke, Sap, Waning, Frozen... something else
three to four illusionary afflictions in-between every demesne hit. Systems would attempt to cure each.
You may only see the rp functions, but the combat side can not be ignored.
It seems if implemented your rp suggestion would be overpowered should anyone feel like using it in combat
