Mentoring is meant to encourage experienced players to help out newbies.
As such, we've made some modifications to the mentor system.
- Mentor bonus credits from a protege purchasing credits will be bound.
- Grouping with a protege will give both of you 5% experience bonus.
- Proteges learning from a mentor can learn up to 20 lessons per
session. Learning 20 lessons at once is equivalent of learning 21
lessons.
- Mentors teaching a protege will improve in that skill EVEN ABOVE
TRANS.
NOTE: Skill strength above trans will not give any additional skills but
may improve other skills that rely on skill level.
We will be very vigilant in monitoring whether there is any seconds
abuse so please just don't do it.

Wow, people farming proteges for credits was already prolific. You can all deny doing it, too, but I have seen more then my share of people on clans talking about "I have 10 proteges and I wish they would buy credits." "I need proteges who will buy credits."
So now... Lusternia makes it so... farming proteges has an even bigger boon. Gogo protege combines! Harvest the plentiful bounty!!
Just FYI, I have 1 protege after 3 years, and only because she is a good friend and asked me to mentor her, because I dislike the farm protege concept and do not go looking for them.
Edit:: Just to point out, most of the changes I am fine with. The skills above trans is the real issue, all it does is encourage more protege farming.

Imperian allows learning up to 30 lessons from (any) other player, so this could be useful... I guess. If only to reduce long learning sessions. EDIT: I don't have any proteges, and I've only had one novice ever express interest in Denust as a mentor but that didn't work out.

This is nice too, especially if it applies to all exp gain and not just bashing exp gain. I wonder how many more mentors would take their proteges Influencing?
Aison2008-09-18 18:39:25
The bound credits seems unnecessary.
I don't think Estarra actually thought about the 'above trans' bit. Above trans discipline, arts, etc. will be horrible. It may take a while, but I'm sure someone will try it out, especially if it makes focus body that much faster.
Unless a divine wants to clarify.

Seems to me that it might encourage folks to look for proteges, but it'll also make sure that the mentor interacts with his or her proteges. So... win, win?

EDIT: That last change is wholly retarded. The others are fine.
Basically, the message should be: If you're a Tracker, you have to love teaching novices, otherwise... well, too bad for you!

Someone has to clearly explain this to me, since I'm getting a mixed input about the trans< thing.
It's already been clarified that trans< environment will help trackers. But trans< discipline will not affect focus body time.

Even without the 'above trans' bit, it would be enough to encourage more involved mentor+protege relationships. That part (and the bound credits), is not needed and unwelcomed.
What if I was saving my bonus mentor cr from proteges purchases to buy Talkan something nice? Now I can't. I can't even sell them to buy myself an aethership!

What about power regen? Will I, someday, be able to inqui/judge someone?
(the above is exaggerated, but I'm still curious.)

I will agree that the binding the credits is a bit annoying, cause I know I wind up selling most of my own credits for gold, so if I got some from a protege purchase, not being able to sell them would be unfortunate.

What the hell.
So you're telling me infinite resilience or an uncapable cosmicfire (highmagic&planar) is now possible? Powergamers are going to rush to exploit this. The player is never at fault. The player is merely trying to win with all tools available to him and should not be expected to pull his punches. This seems so horribly broken and just a bad idea I really think you need to rethink this.

Yeah, and I usually use the mentor bonuses I get from proteges to pay off cr. debts too .
gah, this is horrible.

If someone does this, and in two weeks the little +trans thing is taken out, the jokes on them.
Just curious, is there a cap as to how high the environment or resilience, for instance, can go. Or is there a new "transcendent".

I have two. One from imperian and Glauco. Damn you Glauco, forget everything and learn again!
Noola2008-09-18 18:56:24
I've only ever had two.
Really though, I don't see how this is such a castrophe. Annoying as far as the Bound credits go, but other than that? The announcement doesn't mention the rate at which a person will improve above trans. It could be something crazy like 0.005% for ever thousand lessons taught or something. (totally made those numbers up, but you get what I'm saying).
Why don't we see how it works out before we all start throwing rotten tomatoes?

It doesn't matter how fast it is. People already farm novices for hopeful credit gains. You think they won't farm them for skill gains?
In fact the slower it is to gain the more likely hood of farming novices so you have faster gains.

Like I said, maybe it encourages people to get proteges. It also encourages people to interact with their proteges. So, instead of folks making someone their protege and then never speaking to them again, hoping they buy credits, now people will have to spend at least a little time with their proteges on a semi-regular basis.
