Overprotective mentor, while versing mobs you can protect your protege's (this could be either only 1 or all of them I don't really know.) from all harm.
Shaddus2008-09-20 17:19:55
So what, being a mentor give them invincibility, and makes you a meat shield?
I think not. Number one, abusable badly. "Gee, Timmy. You hit this gorgog, I'll just stand here and watch"
B: No.
And Fourthly, no.

I disagree It really doesn't to much sept let the protege do something while exp gaining. I'm not sure how its abusable like how your saying. The whole point is that when the mentor is hunting the protege can do more then stand there and be like "yawn, I'm bored."
Shaddus2008-09-20 17:31:30
I COULD see something like a small TF. Perhaps when you are grouped with your mentor, AND are under a certain circle, you recieve a 10% protection shield, and perhaps a light raise to your skills, so long as they are not over your mentors in skill.
Your mentor's presence soothes you, enabling you to use your skills with confidence. <----- Possible def line?

Wouldn't that basically be a martyr-like skill where the mentor takes the damage instead of the protege? If so, I like it. It allows the mentor and protege to hunt together, without having to worry about the enemies sneezing the protege to death. Of course, it has to be a defense that you can choose to put up, but otherwise I think it has some merit.

I like Shaddus's idea, and I think it's pretty fair.
Some other ideas:
-Mentor ability to see where their protege is (on same plane?)
-When bashing/influencing with your protege following/following your mentor, you get a boost to karma gain
-When influencing with your protege, you get a boost to esteem gain (don't think this would be useful at all though)
-The ability for the mentor to set a "greeting" for the protege, that the protege can recall at will (kinda like ADMINMESSAGE; pops up upon login, and can do MENTORADVICE to see it again; can be useful for a suggestion like "Bash in Newton until 21, then collect pilgrims for a while. See you soon")

basicly what I was getting at exactly.

I'll add a fifth 'no' to Shaddus' four. Don't give a mini version of one of two useful skills in Ascendance to basically anyone.

You realize that's pretty much exactly like one of the Ascendance skills? Almost to the letter? The only differences are that the Ascendant one isn't limited to proteges and costs essence to use. I'd be able to use your suggestion on Hyrtakos, Lyco, and so on (and the Hartstone would probably tell all their novices to go get Serenguard mentors).

If you are talking about Aegis, then drop the "take damage for your protege" as that could be semi abusable.
Shaddus takes Mukyu Smackahoe to Spectre. Protege is able to kill paladins, because Shaddus can easily tank them?
No.
Just what I suggested. Hell, give it a power/mana/willpower drain/cost, if you want.

When talking about mentor and protege you need to picture this:
Definition Mentor: lvl 90 omni trans character, combatant
Definition Protege: lvl 80 omni trans character, combatant
Now someone suggest the previous stuff again please and say it's not abusable.
WE DON'T NEED MORE BUFFS. WE HAVE ENOUGH TROUBLE WITH THE CURRENT ONES ALREADY. See: Warriors.

Uh. I think I just pointed out a Demigod (Hyrtakos) who is a protege of mine.

If so then I'm sorry. I had to stop reading after the third post or so.. it got too.. um silly. Yes.

Now to add something constructive:
My personal suggestion would have been to give bound credits or lessons to mentor / protege if the protege learnt x lessons from the mentor. Basically the same as the previous stuff except you don't get it automatically tacked on (ie 21 lessons instead of 20, learn above trans) but can use them at will.
Details would need to be sorted out, including that the mentor should never gain nada from the protege if they learn their INITIAL lessons from them. Yay, 20+ proteges in one hour abuse.

As I have been saying, mentors should not get any more bonuses than they already have. A person will either want to teach and be a good mentor, or they will just want the benefits and be a bad mentor. These bonuses will only shift the balance further towards the bad mentors.
Gwylifar2008-09-20 22:40:49
So make the mentor/protege damage transfer thing only happen if they're at least 30 levels apart. Or for a better approach, make how much is absorbed depend on the difference in levels (say, (mentorlevel - protegelevel) / 4 as a percentage of damage diverted, for instance).
Dugan2008-09-20 22:41:47
I agree with Rika 100% on this. You want those people who will actually want to help people get further in the game, not just someone who wants a quick perk.
Dugan.

I really really really think adding buffs is the worst possible approach for this. Beyond worst actually. Far beyond.
Try and think of something else or stick with Rika's idea.

I wanted something like that as an option for the MENTORLOGIN config as well, as I don't really need to see when Hyrtakos logs off, while it's much more useful for those who are still newbies. Never happened, though, so I'm not sure we can really expect that to be an option for new additions either.
Gwylifar2008-09-20 22:52:01
I don't think the intent is so much to encourage mentoring (we already had that, and people already were mentoring), but to encourage mentors to do stuff (like going out hunting) with their proteges. The experience bonus points that way. And it's true that the biggest obstacle for a lot of people to doing that is the problem where anything the mentor can hunt will squish the protege. Assuming methods of containing its utility in other situations (for instance, make it only apply to damage from denizens not loyal to players, and make it proportional to the gap in levels), I don't see what's so bad about it. And it would certainly do what it seems Estarra's trying to do. You guys are throwing it out way too fast.
