I know it's not possible, but, if there was some way for a mentor to be following their protege, and...
... drain bamage. Whee!
Okay. More verbal idea. Mentor Rating System?
Maybe if a Mentor is ranked well enough, they'll get an honors line like "She/He is an excellent mentor."
It could be based mainly off of the protege, and proteges can be honest quite a bit. Maybe learning lessons slightly increases the mentor's rank, and a protege can rank the mentor's performance on their explaining skills and/or abilities? Also, if the mentor goes hunting/bashing with their protege, maybe the experience they gain together would raise the ranking.
Things to lower the mentor's ranking could be things like the protege dying while with the mentor, the protege dying after using some sort of special-protege skill (saveme - Your mind links with (mentor) as you cry out. ; A sharp pain fills your head and you're suddenly aware that (protege) is in danger). Your protege getting kicked out of their orgs could lower your mentor rank. If they go join a "direct-enemy" organization, your mentor rank drops even more (Celestine going Nihilist, Blacktalon going Hartstone).
Probably wouldn't be implemented. And I know people are going to call it stupid and/or impractical. But it'd be interesting to me.

That would be stupid and/or impractical.

Personally, I don't think it's a bad idea, though it may need tweaking.

Thanks!
It most definitely needs tweaking. But it's better than nothing. And it's a lot harder to get than just doing a quest.

Yup. I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you, never gonna make you cry, never gonna say goodbye, and I'm never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.

Also, that's honestly how I feel. Just could feel like the mentor might pressure the poor little novice into giving good ratings.

Ah, but the mentor would actually need to go and save their novice, then, wouldn't they? Also, it sort of forces RP. Your reputation relies on your protege's, because of how much you two would interact.
Like was said, though, more stuff could/should be added to what raises/lowers your mentor ranking.

I like it, seriously.
Don't give proteges the ability to directly affect mentor's rank, but figure out reward tiers and they work themselves up the tiers when bashing with their proteges(npc's only).
Also a very very low gain by simply being with their protege.
Decent gains when proteges are given positions and favors, big big gains if they earn a few certain things(number one in a ranking of various types, artisanals, etc).
Small losses when proteges are evicted from positions and when they quit the city, stuff like that.
All upward motion, with only a very minor ways to lose points. Why? It's really hard to make a fair system for that, so don't put in much automated loss. Let the admin -slap their ranking when something comes to their attention.

Not too fond of that idea. Some newbies get mentors just for someone to ask questions of and don't really need the help. I know I have a few proteges like that. Generally good at doing things on their own and only asking questions when they really need help, not too much interaction unless we both want to. That kind of thing would just force the mentor to perma-attach themselves to the novice whenever they're not in Newton or something.

Err. Not really, it isn't as if it would depend on the relationship with one single novice. It would track the overall mentor-ness of mentors, basically, and reward them for helping characters that grow up big and strong.

What about something like a mentor would get a message from the system whenever their protege reached certain milestones in levels (maybe each of the ones that got you bound credits?), reached new skillranks, got an honors from a quest, had a birthday, joined a family, got engaged, married, had a kid.
The message would be something like, "Congratulations! Your protege, RandomProtege, has been honored as a Savior of the Gnomes!" or, "Congratulations! Your protege, RandomProtege, has become a Master of Knighthood!" and so on like that. So that a) mentors can keep track of protege progress if they're so inclined and B ) mentors can celebrate little milestones with their proteges if they're so inclined.
Maybe it could be something you could toggle on or off. So, if you're just completely uninterested, you can CONFIG MENTORMSGS OFF and not get them.

@Shaddus It's so OP, yet they already have it.
@Other people being the target of a mob is not a buff?
@Any one else People already do this a Mentor takes a protege out for hunting whats wrong with the protege being able to attack too without getting insta wrecked?

No matter what gets added, if anything, it's going to take effort.
And if folks don't want the spam, that's why I suggested being able to turn it off.

It does have the same issue as the current MENTORLOGINS though... in that I'm going to see whenever Lyco brings together the amorous lovers in Delport if I want to pay attention to what my newbie proteges are up to.

Well, I figured it would only count for the first time you do an honors quest, not everytime they do it. Some folks do those quests all the time!
And why would you stop caring about your older protege just cause he/she isn't a newbie anymore?

I'm about to agree with Krin. Mrr.
Anyways, this. You want a good mentor/protege ability? PvE defense.
Esano2008-09-21 04:33:07
Problems occur with high-level proteges/mentors. But a level restriction should help limit it.
lydin2008-09-21 17:15:49
I like the idea of a PvE bonus of some sort. To cut down on abuse, you could add some large nerf for the mentor. Maybe something like when I'm followed by my protege and turn the buff on, she's more tanky against denizens but I bash like I'm near her level, and we both get an experience boost. That's a rough cut, but the idea is nerf the mentor so the ability is useless for anything else and won't be abused.
