Custom poses would be so helpful for kneeling. It never ceases to irritate me that reading a help scroll or things like that make you stand up.

Why not...
For the syntax?
CODE
EMOTE nips at his tail absentmindedly (is here, nipping at his tail)
For the syntax?

EMOTE 's eyes roll up into the back of his head (is here, looking soulless)

About two years ago this came up and was shot down because it could be abused ("Bob is here, with Fain kneeling at his feet groveling" was the example I remember hearing). At the same time on the forum for another MUD I played, where this was a basic function (the syntax was simply POSE is here doing whatever.) and had never been abused, being allowed to change your own description was being shot down because it could be abused ("He looks almost exactly unlike the guy who just robbed you" being the example that was used). I was amused.

To be fair, not seeing or hearing of it being abused doesn't necessarily mean it never was (and descriptions ARE abused here occasionally-- though not quite in that manner).
Gwylifar2008-10-03 02:10:24
In that MUD, given the size of it, being on close terms with the two people who ran it, and being at the time its primary coder, it really was the same. No one could recall it ever having been abused. Some people had used it poorly, but no one had done any of the things that this forum insisted were inevitable.
That said, it's not really a fair comparison. What might be inevitable here wouldn't've been even likely there. I was more puzzled at their idea that being able to describe yourself (or even control one line at the end of the description) would be used to try to get out of being arrested for crimes, which probably wouldn't even be inevitable here, and was frankly ludicrous there.

It seems, at least I hope, that anyone who seriously abused it to be a jerk would be called out. People have been called out for less.

Well sure, that could happen. But would be smacked down (by peers and by Gods) so fast that it'd make the person doing it's head spin. You can abuse emotes that way too.
Emote shoves you into a mud puddle, laughing as you land face first in the mud and begin crying like a little girl.
I could do that easily, if I wanted to be dumb, but we still get to custom emotes. People might be jerks about it, but then they get yelled at by their city/guildmates, called out on the forums, have rolepoints docked, get disfavored, etc.
Gwylifar2008-10-03 12:14:41
Just to be clear, I didn't think it would get abused, or that if it did, it would be any more significant than other minor abuses. I thought it was funny that the idea was completely shot down (by the admins as well as players) because someone thought it might.

Oh, the point of my post wasn't, "Gwylifar! You fool!" It was just to point out to those people who worry about the abuse that that it isn't as big a deal as they worry over.
Shurimaru2008-10-03 13:59:54
Yeah, really. With every new feature that gets implemented, there's a chance that it will be abused. Most likely by the extreme minority of people who are just asshats.

So, how about that idea of us being able to attach more prefatory phrases to commands other than give and say? A couple that come to mind are things like remove, wear, wield, unwield, sit, stand, get, (maybe sheathe and draw, but I dunno). Pretty please?
Away with you people and your negativity for emotes to be more awesome. -peer-

I don't mind adding more verbs able to prepend gerunds, but its a time consuming process and not a high priority at this time.
