Yep. "Yes sir" actually worked. I think anything starting with a Yes works, but the single word answers don't work with these NPCs (they say, SPEAK IN A FULL SENTENCEDAMNIT). I think "Yes I would like to help you" would have worked but I only tried "I would like to help you" without the yes.

Hallifax's prophecy quest already gets the Collective to have a good look-see into the future or something, so there's plenty of precedent for lovely time-twisting.

How did Cririk come to be preserved in glass? Trying to write a research proposal for Hallifax and just wondering if he's dead or just in temporal stasis so that my abstract is correct.

I think they're prevented due to risk of being used maliciously. Just rename it (ie to .txt) and require them to rename it before they use it. Or link to an outside site.
