Centigrade is old fashioned way of saying it too and it's also a different scale.

how does preservation oil work
Lendren2010-04-14 14:37:17
COAT - WITH PRESERVATION
Reduces the decay of the item by about 10%.

"reduces the decay by 10%"?

Is that permanent, or just for a few (IG) months?

It slides off after about 72 RL hours of being applied, give or take.
And I'm very certain it halves decay time, and stacks with anything else that might reduce decay. No idea where this 10% is coming from - it has increased the lifespan of my cauldron by way more than 10%.
EDIT: Other preservation tidbits: it has a message when it slides off if you are online, similar to the sharpness decay message, but you will receive no system message if it slides away while you are offline. This makes it difficult to track exactly how long it lasts. It also does no work on quest items, even though it can still be applied.

so, basically, I shoulda been using it since I got my tinkering glasses

Yeah. So long as you remember to keep applying it whenever it slides off, it is great for special items like Celestian phials and trans trade toys, or other items you'd otherwise not be able to protect from decay short of stockroom storage.
Or keeping those cheaply made food baskets around longer, so they can do their job of preserving food for longer.

That's about all I use it for. I've gone through about a dozen baskets since it came out preserved with it. It's extended the lives of some more than others, so there's a random factor, but the average is around 10%. If you do better, count your blessings.

Most likely the random factor is when you apply it. Decay is only applied at the 1st and 13th of the month, so if it's not preserved at that time it might well get the whole tick's worth despite, say, having being preserved for 10 hours of that time anyway.

Anyone have any idea how to tell the rate for converting essence? Like light into cloud, such and such.

The rate? It should be 1 to 1 in all cases. Unless you mean something like, how often people actually do it.

Isn't it always 1:1? Then again, I've only done so in Glom, so there might be a way I don't know of...

Eventru, Maylea, Elostian, Kalikai, Fain, Lisaera, Nocht. I haven't seen any others recently. Terentia was around for a bit, but I haven't seen her recently either.
Eldanien2010-04-15 04:19:07
Terentia is fairly active. I see the telltale zaps regularly.
