Because I was told once that when we call the Ladies to EtherWilde they come from the Moon bubble to Ethereal to do a tour of duty as guardians. That person could well have been mistaken...

Or it could've been a nice IC explanation of where they come from.

I have noticed something strange while I'm influencing. If I'm remove my tiara (Kharaen's design, that won the Beauty Seal, for reference), and put on a pumpkin hat in its place, influence attacks are stronger. To the point where it takes significantly less influences to empower things. For example, influencing a sprite for me normally is 2 admiration/2 compliments. With the pumpkin hat, it's reduced to 2/1. The stronger fae (and other stronger denizens) are reduced by 2-3 influences before they're empowered.

Now I'm curious. I mean, it's clearly obvious that somebody wearing a ridiculous (yet so adorable) pumpkin hat telling you that you're a good person is a far more credible source than somebody wearing expensive, beautiful jewelry telling you the same. My question is why, mechanically, is this so? I'd like to find out so I can maximize my influencing potential.

EDIT: Oh, and just so I'm clear, wearing either item, my prestige level is still "like royalty," so that's not it.
Xavius2010-04-17 01:39:46
Your prestige is only a coarse indicator, so you can't count on that always meaning the same thing.

If I had to guess (and this is indeed a wild guess), your problem is that you're not wearing enough clothing. The amount of prestige granted by jewelry is capped by some function regarding your clothes. It was coded in way back in the beta days to stop people from running around dressed like a stripper after last call and influencing better than everyone else.

If that is the case, then warriors might be getting the short end of that deal, since armor doesn't count as clothing.

It might for prestige. The formula might just be non-jewelry prestige. I honestly don't know. Never needed to. Best bet might be to ask an ancient Moondancer influencer about it.

Subj: Weekend Event!

The Fates have whispered in my ear that there could be interesting
-HAPPENINGS- tomorrow, beginning around 10:00 a.m. PST. You may want to
make sure to be around if you're curious or make yourself scarce if
you're wise...

Also, I've just confirmed with IRE that there will -not- be an extension
on the lesson sale. Therefore, if you want to take advantage of this
promotion, you need to make sure you purchase them this weekend!

Penned by My hand on the 12th of Tzarin, in the year 262 CE.

So... The simple question is: What time GMT is 10:00 a.m. PST?

EDIT: Also, a suggestion from a non-state-person: Please use GMT when giving times like this. I've got no clue what the various timezones in the US mean, and GMT is the standard timezone.
Unknown2010-04-17 02:50:16
5pm GMT. Google is your friend (PST IS GMT - 7:00).

May as well just learn what PST is.

They used to, but they kept doing the conversions wrong, so they just swapped to local time.

EDIT: Oh, and just so I'm clear, wearing either item, my prestige level is still "like royalty," so that's not it.

I believe that the prestiges are actually a range of values. So just as a made-up example, say each piece of clothing added 10 prestige points. The prestige nondescript might be a range from 10 to 30, so wearing one, two, or three pieces of clothing would all appear as nondescript in STAT but wearing three items would still be higher prestige than wearing one. So combined with Xavius' point about capping the effect of jewelry, perhaps the tiara wasn't helping your prestige, so no loss when you removed it, but adding the hat did help your prestige.

A theory.

Timewarp is a horehound cure- does this mean it's blocked by an octave and undeafness?
Shaddus2010-04-17 03:29:40
The time in that post is roughly Noon CST (Central Standard Time) I think.

Actually MDT (the timezone I belong in) is UTC/GMT -7 hours but things get more confusing with daylights savings time.

The only confusing thing with daylight savings time is that GMT don't change, while most other timezones do. Presumably to eliminate the confusion of which 02.30 is referred to on that night of the year.

Or due to the fact that they, like Arizona, don't observe DST? It's a fairly new concept, as far as history is concerned. Which is ironic, really, since it's also now fairly outdated.

(Note: I'm not sure whether the UK observes DST or not, as I've never been there or needed to exchange times with anyone in the timezone.)

Well, DST adds more daylight to the afternoon hours, which (according to Wikipedia) slightly reduces traffic fatalities, among other things.

Up until five minutes ago, when this thread made me curious enough to check, I'd always thought DST was so that construction workers and such like could see better for longer (and I think that is part of it). Apparently though, there are a ton of things that DST still affects, so I wouldn't say it's outdated per se. The list of things simply changes and evolves as decades pass.

Mostly though, I personally find DST to be a pain in the tush.

I actually really like DST and wish it were in effect whole year round.

What? I like it when it's dark outside, and if I wake up and it's bright out, I'll feel more rested.

Like so many others (apparently), I noticed that the functionality of the Privacy Gem on the artifact listing isn't described in any meaningful way.

I've already done a forum topic search, and I found five or six relevant threads, all filled with a colorful array of guesswork and assumptions. Despite being a chaotic mess, these essentially boil down the to item being 99% useless, and also possibly regarded by the Divine as a beacon for potentially hilarious mudsex voyeurism.

Two questions:

Has this changed at all in the last two years (since the last thread about it was made)?

If not, is there some reason why it doesn't grant complete and total privacy? It's not like people can't use chat programs for sensitive private discussions (or digital uniting of unmentionables), even staying in character if they wish, so I don't see the harm.

Yes, curing timewarp with horehound is blocked by octave. The focus mind cure still works.

I think Geb said he'd bug/envoy it.
