Getting "poke dune with shovel" from that sentence requires leaps of logic that not even Sierra would use. Except in that very specific instance, you've never had to poke anything with anything else before, making this a syntax hunt near a powerful and aggressive mob that you can't run from once it engages you. Having the syntax be made clear is what's required in this case. Especially because he does not tell you to "poke dune with shovel". He tells you to poke the dune and run.

All it would take is one of the "" things, which a few quests do in fact give. We all understand to take those as OOC, and there's no unfair advantage in giving it, or weakening of the challenge -- after all, it's not like your character would consider it a puzzle to figure out how to poke a dune with a shovel. (If a quest's challenge is harmed by removing the syntax hunt, the quest needs to be rethought.)

There's an argument to be made for it. I was more reacting to the unnecessary abrasiveness to someone trying to help him.

There are many quests with completely wonky and seemingly arbitrary syntax requirements, as this quest shows though. So when people ask for this help, it's better to just give them the syntax needed. Otherwise you don't get any help. So despite his attitude, he had it right. Especially now that we're even allowed to post quest walkthroughs if we so please.

Perhaps quest-specific syntaxes could be added to the lore pages though?
