I still like Zalandrus's idea a lot better. Not just in hopes of selling more instruments, I mean. I like the idea that you have to build up for quite a while to prepare for that moment so you can't do it every fight, or even every year. And I like it not being a clone of a skill four other guilds have. Maybe it could be tied into DiscordantChord, so it'd count as another one or two "notches" on the score that the Chord goes against (say, one notch for 50%-95%, or two notches for 96%-maestro). Because the chord is that much more discordant if you rend your instrument to pieces in the process of playing it! I am seriously going to suggest this.

It really doesn't take that long to get an instrument to maestro level, and I really, really doubt that somebody would buy an 11-16k instrument just to break it. You would simply see an increase in the amount of worn lutes people would be toting about.

It takes more than a year. That's far more than the setup for any other skill, by an order of magnitude. I know plenty of people who'd have that one shazam-instrument tucked away for the minute they really need it. (And most of my instruments cost a fair bit less than 11K these days. Wood's half what it used to be.)

It is on my to buy list, but first on that list is a customized mage staff. I saw that I'd need to spend an extra 50-100 credits making said staff both permanent and returnable, so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone a purchase the shield rune with the staff. That way, I have the pretty staff which doubles as a shield, and I've 'saved' 100 credits
