I believe so, since I don't think you get marked as the owner just by buying the pony. I think you get the mark once you actually put it into the incubation stage at the stables.

The former is called a Vernal Ascendant, the latter a True Ascendant. True Ascendants can change their names, Vernal Ascendants can't. That's it. I think.

These are the upgradable artifacts if I'm not mistaken.
I'm not sure about the regen or knight runes, but I'm pretty sure that all others can be upgraded.
